Can you tell me what limited vocabulary means? The reason I ask is that use of words that people don’t understand leads to not being listened to, there are plenty who do it to sound superior to others.

Nope, I may have got the character wrong… but it’s from a TV Soap.
Still think it was Hilda and Stan…
The artwork (was it flying ducks?) on the lounge wall was proudly displayed to neighbours… who were invited to comment on “my muriel” instead of “mural”…'cos the poor girl got confused…
goes back possibly 30/40/50 years… (yes, we’ve been married that long…)
Another “goof” was the character who talked about “Candlebra” instead of “Candelabra”
We’ve so many memories of things which made us laugh… and still do… hurrah.

I enjoy repartee and maybe have mistaken this forum for including intellectual banter and not just being a ‘how to’ resource.

This can happen all over, especially across different languages. The pregnant pause in southwest France over ‘gravid’ and ‘embarassada’ spring to mind.

Not really true. People have vocabularies according to their education, academic acumen and world experience. Surely, you would not expect them to edit according to the lowest literary level possible? Might get rather monosyllabic.
The cleverest people I know have the gift of being able to communicate complex ideas in simple language.
I’m afraid that many who want to appear intellectual do the opposite.

Different strikes for different folks. The beauty is that everyone is nor exactly the same.
That’s good as mine has been here all along (only have 1, the rest have broken over the years).
As a teen we’d often say ‘oh Muriel’ if doing something a bit dim, straight from Muriel’s Wedding, classic Aussie film!
