(How) would you know if one of us was a chatbot?

I can (invariably, as far as I know) spot spam, phishing, spoofing and everything else like that.

But would I know if one of you (and would you know if I …) was a chatbot, or pasting stuff you’d got from a source like ChatGPT?

We’d probably start to be a lot more knowledgable and polite…

Dream on :yum::wink::laughing:

Curiously there’s a character who posts in The Register forums using the handle amanfrommars who may well be a chatbot/AI. Very much like some AI ‘paintings’, what he expresses almost makes sense most of the time.

Interesting reading

Although it can write convincingly, it doesn’t mean that what it says is true.

The point of weakness of ChatGPT is that it’s trained on outdated data from 2021 or 2022. It will not be able to detect something that happened recently,

it’s hard to coax a strong opinion out of ChatGPT about charged political debates; usually, you’ll get an evenhanded summary of what each side believes

A good hint:

It can also give long-winded replies, a problem its developers put down to trainers “preferring long answers that look more comprehensive”.

“One of the biggest problems with ChatGPT is that it comes back, very confidently, with falsities,” says Wooldridge. “It doesn’t know what’s true or false. It doesn’t know about the world. You should absolutely not trust it. You need to check what it says.

AI detector programs (for the seriously paranoid)

Interesting article a couple of days ago on how a NY journalist is using AI to transcribe and successfully summarise his audio interviews

If it’s hard to convince a chatbot to give a strong opinion, then that rules out 99% of posters on here!

This is all going to move at break neck speed. Hard to see where we’re going

Probably show you some traffic lights and ask to point them out

A few months ago I had a very convoluted encounter with a chatbot about why I was still waiting for the glass bathroom door that had been ordered several months earlier. Eventually I typed something along the lines of ‘This exchange is useless and you’re useless too.’

A couple of seconds later a reply came back, ‘Please don’t get angry with me, I’m just a little chatbot.’

Wondered if the ‘little chatbot’ was actuallly a little person in India…

Have you seen Terminator, The Matrix or Soylent Green?

It’s a mixture of that.

That’s sweet. (And a very clever marketing ploy).

Did it say “You are totally talking to Robert today.” and “Please do the necessary.” at any point?

The chatbot, if indeed that’s what it was, was far more proficient than that sort of human (puts two fingers down throat in mock vomiting gesture).

For once, I’m glad my French isn’t good enough to always spot that sort of stuff.

A long time ago when still in the UK I had a conversation with a TMobile operative who had a Black S African accent, so I asked her if she was in JHB, which of course, she was and we then had a long pleasant chat about the city and eventually she got my problem sorted. I don’t think her employers expected calls to be dealt with in this way, but then they’re not Africans.

I wonder if they would have to admit to being a chatbot if directly asked…but then, I was once on Twitter and probably got into heated arguements with chatbots way back before we found out that Twitter had at least 48 million bots…(15%).

No chat bot would have my awful behind fire bricks so I think I’m good  and @David_Spardo has met me so I’d need to be amazing

I have mentioned it before

There is something predictive in the way that some people think. Perhaps that drives them to write, paint, make films…

The capabilities of A.I. will collide with our collective intelligence. And the world will start changing in ways we can’t yet predict.
