I hope no-one is caught up in the fire by Marseille

Article from the BBC this morning, looks nasty.

Big wildfires south of Narbonne as well over the last few days. Closed the A9 towards Spain for quite a while. About 2000 hectares burned.

Hope it wasn’t the same guy who caused fires near here last week by loading a large barbecue on the back of his truck that he hadn’t properly extinguished. It relit and trailed sparks behind it that caused the fires. Doh.

The latest this morning seems to suggest that it’s been brought under control near Marseilles. A big drop in wind speed has helped enormously.

Ditto - hope everyone is safe. The risk is not just in Marseilles.

That was the first big fire of the year in the Narbonne area, although it’s been eclipsed by Marseille and Tarragona, sadly.

As far as I know, the halfwit with the BBQ is still locked up.

That would be quite a facepalm moment - BBC reporting that it was a car that caught fire in the heat which sparked the larger wildfire.

Yes, I was just using that to point out the stupid things people do that can have terrible consequences.

I think halfwit is being kind to him.

Indeed.

I was trying to be polite.

A really good website that tracks and informs on forest fires in France.

A new one has just popped up near Lézignan-Corbières

Oh dear. Are you near there, hairbear?

It’s in the valley and we are in the Black Mountains North-West of there so not close.

Oh right, far enough away then. We’re the other side of Narbonne from Lézignan, no problem here either.

Now turns out the car (from Marseille) didn’t have a CT and shouldn’t even have been on the road.

Indeed. Reported by the Connexion. If it was indeed unroadworthy then the person whose car it was is in deep trouble.

Karma can be a bitch.

Not Marseille, but on my doorstep here in 17 according to local Facebook posts… :worried:

I hope that stays away from your home.

If a bush fire is nearby it’s always a good idea not just to have an escape route, but to prepare an escape bag with essential documents and a laptop etc.

Absolutely great advice :+1: And not only if a fire is near, we live in an area that has burnt within my memory, and later flooded with many deaths, though we’re on a ridge and fire is our primary concern. It’s prudent to have a list of what you would grab if you were given fifteen (or even five) minutes to leave.

Would it be the Monet or the Chagall :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

Actually, twenty plus years ago when I was house hunting, I was shown a pretty but small stone house in Vidauban on a hectare. There was a recently burnt out magnificent modern house on the site too which had been the main dwelling. The estate agent told me a few valuable, as in very valuable, paintings had gone up with the house.
