I always find the differences between the USA and Canada quite remarkable, close neighbours, but they have such different histories.

After Trump’s intervention in the Irish unification debate, maybe Carney could wind him up by suggesting that it makes geographical sense for Alaska to become part of Canada, or alternatively it should be sold back to Russia…

Am in the country at the moment, and the media outlets here are trying to make a mountain out of a molehill, when it turns out that approximately 4 out of 5 Canadians say they would be in favour of closer ties. Even many conservatives (listening to the news on TV in the hotel this morning) see it as making sense, given what is happening with the next door neighbour, despite their usual reservations for such an organization.

Does Canada have its own military? I imagine we’d have to cooperate on that front.

But if the Australians are in too, hopefully we could make that work. Just, it could be a bloodbath if things got serious on Kanuck territory.

It does. My son-in-law was in the Canadian army for several years as a part-timer. He’s now focused on his estate agency work, which brings in a lot more money :slightly_smiling_face:

Canada is a NATO member. It looks like it spends (% GDP) about the same as the UK.

Slightly off topic (but only a bit) - at various times in the past century there have been moves to have Canada annex the Turks & Caicos Islands and potentially make them a new province of Canada…

Cynics said that this idea tended to come up whenever Canada was in the grip of a particularly harsh winter, but it’s true that there is quite a firm connection between the two despite the distance - Canada is the second largest tourist market after the USA, and about 50,000 Canadians live there.

ScotiaBank and Royal Bank of Canada both have branches there - I used to bank with RBC!

It will probably never happen, but it’s an interesting idea!
