On the other side of the room there is a fireplace alcove with more cupboards and a large stove.
We NEVER use this stove now and so are wanting to replace it with a standard 60cm cooker and wider cupboards and longer worktop.
There is no way we will find a match for the existing glossy grey.
I’d be really grateful for ideas as to what we should do with this alcove so that it compliments the colours in the rest of the kitchen and doesn’t look bizarre. Thanks
(NB: believe it or not the cabinets on both sides of the kitchen are the same colour - the ones by the stove have the sun shining on them so look much lighter.)
Our kitchen is also Cuisinella in glossy grey. I don’t know if they still do the colour.
This doesn’t directly answer your question but I remember the salesman saying that you can swap the doors over and keep the same cupboards if you fancied change of colour.
“There is no way we will find a match for the existing glossy grey”
You might be pleasantly surprised. We also had a cuisinella kitchen and when we sold our house last June the buyers wanted more cupboards. They went to back to cuisinella and were told that they could be matched. The existing cupboards were 8 years old.
For the cooker, I can only recommend this type of model with two ovens. This allows you to cook or reheat several dishes at the same time, and it is undoubtedly energy efficient since the cavities are smaller than in a conventional oven. I personally use them to make my own yoghurt/bread in one, without the other being wasted!
if in your situation, my inclination would be for a single granite worktop with an inset induction hob and a built under oven, which will more be unified and look more upmarket than a small slot-in cooker. This combination would also be a lot easier to keep clean, and without gas pollution or fire hazard, nor dragging heavy cylinders around. I’d also add a low splashback to match the worktop stone - easier to clean than exposed brick.
If you can’t get cupboards in the original colour, you can have it mixed to match and protected with a spray varnish. Obviously keep the handles from the old units.
You are thinking of selling in next two years? A kitchen with good quality in-situ range is possibly more appealing than a simple hob and oven. I think I would just have an additional nice work surface placed neatly over the whole lot, with proper lip so hide hob and not go to much extra expense.
If you don’t use the range would you use a cooker? If not, then why buy one?
The range is disgusting - the interior of the door is peeling off. Would never buy Brandt again and I just want it out the place.
I do not need anything elaborate or expensive - a gas cooker in white will be fine - matches dishwasher.
We use a ninja.
Electric not possible - prefer gas anyway.
The kitchen is 16 years old. Cuisinella have changed the dimensions of their carcasses in that period.
Anyway, the units will be larger. Yes, will keep handles.
Ours is a mouse-ridden spider-ridden 350 year old farmhouse that sheds lime render all the time and is a nightmare to keep clean, so open shelving - no. Been there and done that.
Someone with a good eye for colour is who I need please. Suggestions for door colour and worktop colour.
Greens go well with greys. Look at the F&B chart, and then can match colour with a cheaper one. Md maybe bisit a grnit/quartz and marble supplier to choose worktop. That’s what we are doing.
Not on topic, but this post reminds me…
When we fitted our 28 (yes) Hygena kitchen units after the flat packs had been stored 3 years in our barn we noticed two of the doors had twisted.
We had bought all of the units from MFI for under £1000.
In the meantime MFI and Hygena UK had gone. Hygena France still going, selling exactly the same units. But €650 each!
We changed the layout and relegated the two duff ones to tool storage in the basement.
Plan B: Thanks everyone for your help and suggetions, but sanity prevailed when I was in M Bricolage yesterday afternoon having been round Bricomarche in the morning and I’d not found anything that felt right.
Why on earth am I spending this money if we are going back to the UK within two-ish years and whoever moves in will rip everything out anyway?
So the large range (unused) will be thoroughly cleaned up. We will use the burners, which function (sort of) and the Ninja will be our “cooker” of choice on a day to day basis.
