We are either separating or getting divorced amicably. We bought our house en tontine. Can anyone help me understand the pros and cons as to which is better as my husband wants to keep the house and I won’t force him to sell. Any advice would be welcomed.
Pros and cons of what? Selling or not selling?
Where are you divorcing? In France or elsewhere?
Did you buy it 50:50?
I suspect, but don’t know, that the advice would be the same as what I got with my late wife’s successors, which was to buy their half of it from them and save troubles later. But I could be wrong.
Need more info! Is it separating or divorce? Is your husband living with someone else? Are there children?
My old neighbours divorced and the wife wanted to stay in the family home so had to buy the husband off to do so. The price was fixed by the divorce court and took into account his prison time for trying to kill her (the devil drink again)
Either sell and split the proceeds, or have it valued and he buys out your 50%. If he can’t afford that, sell.
But talk to a notary especially if there are children involved.
TALK TO A NOTAIRE. Sorry to shout but it is essential that you do.
Year ago Vero, hopefully they did?
Oh my goodness, you don’t think…that there has been a double murder? ![]()
Argh good grief, why did it appear as a new post? That’ll teach me to look at dates, urgh I’m an idiot.
No you aren’t, I have been banging on about tired old threads leading me astray for some time now.
Wow tough times, hope you are doing OK and your other half for that matter. Am in no way knowledgeable on the technicalities of this but the fact that this is so far amicable means that he should realise that he will have to pay to cover your share - how that is worked out between the two of you is potentially where thinhs could become acrimonious potentially? Hopefully not.
Hope all goes well and you both can go forward.
As I said to vero, this is a year-old thread. No point in commenting now.
Please don’t turn this thread into a “thing”.
I’m still worried about what happened to them both. ![]()
