Improving internet speed

Try a 4G antenna on the roof or somewhere high up outside to see whether that would improve things ?

Well he could, but then he ought to use his own 4G router when there, rather than the potentially unsecured local wifi network provided by the hub. He would probably get a better 4G signal for the router out of it too, as it is fairly rare for business hubs to be set up where there is poor 4G signal (at least these days, at any rate).

Another thing to consider is how your wifi devices are connecting to the 4G router. To the extent possible, make sure they are only connecting via 5GHz Wifi, rather than the less efficient 2.4Ghz that often tends to be the default in 4G routers. This might also reveal a limitation of your wifi circuits on the computing devices if they can’t force 5Ghz connection, or establish them by default.

Well there is judgemental billy and rice. We are doing nothing illegal. All taxes are paid in France and all above board. Firewalls in place, etc

Umm, I don’t see that I have been in the slightest judgemental - I have merely pointed out that mobile repeaters might land you in eau chaude avec la loi. I’m sorry if that is inconvenient for you.

Technically an external antenna is a much better solution anyway.

I’ve just had another thought, as this is something I do when out and about for work.

If the signal and speed is better on the phone, use that to set up a wifi access point with a password for the devices to access the internet via the phone, and use the data subscription on that.

I recently went to Ireland and discovered that my 4G router, which has worked fine pretty much everywhere else in the world I’ve taken it, was as slow as a snail (maybe it’s just Kerry, and Athlone, who knows), or some rubbish roaming deal that SFR has with Irish providers. Anyway, it turned out to be more practical and faster to use my phone as an access point, even with 3 devices connecting through it, bandwidth was very good.

We were never talking about repeteurs. Always about antenne exterieur

In that case allow me to apologise, I mis-read your original post.

What products did you find on Amazon?

40 euros month (vs normal 50) if you sign up by Monday 31st July. StarLink eqpt necessary at fnac, and I think Darty, till end July at 50% off ie 200 euros or so vs 400 euros.

I’m sorely tempted but will wait a bit longer as with my current low usage I can’t really justify it. But for a larger or more intensively using household it’s easily comparable to the sort of broadband package you’d have with Orange anyway.

If you need mobiity and roaming then that’s the weak point as far as I can tell at present.

Another poster on here - apologies I’ve forgotten who - posted about StarLink - these deals - a couple of months ago, you could probably search it.

There were threats of throttling in the US but it eventually did not happen for those on a standard service. Those on best efforts (where there was over subscription and under capacity) were throttled but it appears that almost all US customers are now on a standard service with no throttling, due to the increase in satellites being launched (v2 with greater capacity).
Here in France (and the rest of Europe) there has not been any throttling - although it was mentioned as a possibility but with the extra launches that situation has not become a reality.
I have had two outages, once seemed to be a global DNS issue - possibly google, the other was an unknown cause. It delivers what they promise and I think its pretty good value if there are no or few alternatives.

The monthly charge was 50 euros but it has been reduced for new and existing customers to 40 euros going forward. The great bargain is the reduction in price of the equipment.

Thank you all. I am on with ordering Starlink right now. Seems the best thing to do. Thanks

It will be interesting to see how you get on with it including the installation- please update when you can.

See this video from Charlie DIY which may prove useful (as are all of his videos!):

Yes, I’ll be interested too now the prices are approaching competitivity.

Is that “-111 dBm” the strength of the incoming 4G signal or of the WiFi coming out of the 4G router?

Almost certainly the 4G signal - -110dBm is a bit too low for WiFi to work at all, but certainly within the range of a 4G signal (my phone is currently reporting -108dBm, for instance).

Will certainly be interested to see how it goes, especially long term.

Will definitely report back on how it all goes after we have it delivered then get to instal it. Thanks again

Starlink kit arrived today - hopefully that will be a hurrah when installed. Will let you know how we get on installing. Need to wait a couple of days as OH has a ton of work and doesn’t need the upheaval of switching from the 4g box horrors to a new system (even though it may well be much better) as he has devised a mad workaround for dealing with big files and it is currently operationally so that he can manage.

Hope Starlink does what it is meant to :stuck_out_tongue:

OHcouldn’t wait. Too excited. Installed and working. He’s getting fast upload and download but we think the satellite would be even better a little higher up. He can download 300 meg files with no problem so he is very happy. We even get full Wi-Fi in the house :hushed:

Have to say me too as it is an income! Soulagee!
