Improving internet speed

Thanks for keeping us updated.

I saw some videos on YouTube that said it can take a couple of days for the speed to finally settle on something consistent. I’d be interested if you can let us know what speeds you eventually do get from sites such as speedtest.net

I agree. Might take a few days. Will see as we go but for sure will let you know

At the moment running five times faster than the SFR 4Gbox both upload and download and we don’t think it’s best placed yet

Hurrah, still got internet this morning. Download showing 75 and upload showing 35. So far so good

I am very glad to hear its going well so far.

My starlink improved over the first two days. You may occasionally see ‘booting’, searching’, ‘obstructed’ in the statistics on the App. They are when either the dish or router receives an update - mine are usually around 4am.

Those speeds seem a bit low - you can see on the app if there are any obstructions.

Another thing to use (if you are not aware) is if you use a browser and go to http://192.168.100.1 you get a web based version of the app (not as detailed but handy none the less)

I’ve read this thread with interest. Great that you have reported back as to how Starlink is working for you. Thanks.

Thanks PeterJ, that is invaluable information.

As we only set it up yesterday afternoon OH says he is expecting it to settle and improve. We are not sure we have the satellite dish in its best place yet and think raising it up higher may improve things further. We will give it 24 hours before we move it. OH even has internet in his office now which has saved him from working in the ‘atelier’ which was the only place where he could get decent internet to download any files with the 4G box (then had to copy those to a stick, go up to his office to download them and then manipulate them - or whatever he does to them - then copy to stick and come down to atelier to upload them to wherever they are due to go). So far he has stopped complaining, which is always a blessing

Install the Open Signal app and you can find the local base stations for Orange, SFR and Free.

There’s a direction finder tool for the nearest base station , but I suspect it only works for your subscribed network.

The wonders of 21st century communications

The only reason to consider raising the dish is to clear any obstructions - if you have none then don’t spend your efforts and energy raising it.

The app has an obstruction tab - if that shows no obstructions then don’t worry … enjoy a happier less complaining OH

Good idea PeterJ. Sorry I haven’t yet worked out how to reply to a post with the @ thing to stop it being so generic.

OH is well chilled, but now he’s moved on to something else to complain about. “Plus ca change”

I do hope this thread will help others in the same situation as we were. Had we known we would have gone Starlink from the word go.

Is starlink portable, i.e. if I have it in the UK, can I bung the kit in my car for our time in France, then take it home again?

Yes, you can, but you need to check how to transport it as apparently this is quite important. As we are never going back to the UK, this was not a consideration for us

There’s a couple of ways. You can either click the “Reply” link underneath a message to reply directly to that. It shows that you replied to a specific user’s post, with a link to jump back to the original post.

Personally I don’t like that way and prefer to quote people instead… I highlight the text I want to quote and an option to Quote appears (or I can just use the keyboard shortcut of pressing Q). That way, the message I’m responding to is embedded in my post. I find it easier to read messages that way, especially when there can be different people responding to different things within the same thread.

I’m sure I saw something about a different tariff to be portable but that might have been the US service. Worth checking.

I read it in detail and concluded it’s not really set up for roaming.
But I’d be delighted to be wrong as I could see myself moving to StarLink in the next 1-2 years, if it would roam as seamlessly as 4G to UK/Europe.

It appears to be but you have to opt to mobile for a minimum of a month. The costs are 100 euro per month for regional and 230 euro per month for global. There is a warning that you may not be able to return to the ‘Standard’ contract at your primary address ( I assume if you were in an over subscribed location, not common in France but still some locations in the US)

Thanks - NOT a viable option then. At the moment we use a mobile phone as a wifi hotspot with 4G data, but only have 5 Gb roaming data and that’s not quite enough for a full 2 weeks if one or both of the laptops decided to do a windows update. But 100 euros buys quite a few 5 Gb SIM cards.

Pause the updates for a couple of weeks then

Does your phone have eSIM or a second SIM slot?

Either would let you use a local French SIM for data while you are still contactable on your U.K. number.

I may well bite the bullet this time & pick up a local SIM in Leclerc. It would be a lot better than running out of data and paying £10/100Mb.
