Insurance for the unforeseen

Does anyone have any info that might answer my question.

Is it mandatory for an individual to have a sort of cover all that is not covered by other policies (such as car,) “third party insurance cover” (my term🤔), In case I, or someone / something of mine (dog, perhaps, even though I don’t have one), accidentally damages a third party or their property?

Normally part of your home insurance. It’s similar to when some complain push bikes should have insurance which would be covered by a home insurance policy.

It is not mandatory to have civil liability insurance, which is I think what you are talking about, but it is strongly recommended. But it is obligatory for example if you rent somewhere, if you want your child to join school expeditions, and other situations.

in our case essential when our dog broke a friend’s brand new glasses - and you know how expensive that is!

Makes Rona’s chewing of two pair’s of OH’s Merrell sandals (the second pair the day they arrived in the post) plus a pair of comfy slippers (he needs an extra large size, so not easily found) seem quite modest - mind you, no insurance to cover the cost of new ones.

Unless, of course, you have a category dog like a Rottweiler. My insurance company wouldn’t insure my gentle Boss (top left) and I had to spend 25 euros a month with a shyster company for a year to stay legal. As there was no chance of him ever hurting anybody (he even kissed a cat walking through the house uninvited) I didn’t even bother the next year which, sadly due to his age, was his last.

Usually Assurance Juridique is offered as an extra along with your property insurance, not expensive but worth having in case of neighbour disputes, damage etc.

Thanks for your responses.
