Interesting perspective on the PM in waiting

I am not sure how much I disagree with you to be honest.

I haven’t been back now for two years and the current government make my skin crawl and my blood boil.

But I am reminding myself not to throw the baby out with the bathwater so to speak.

Isn’t there a bit of a disconnect though between ‘amazing things about the UK’ and ‘hope’?

There are of course a lot of amazing things about the UK - but they’re not really good meat for a discussion forum. They’re things like the countryside, beautiful old buildings, aspects of culture - things we’ve all enjoyed in the past. But they’re generally not new developments that we want to draw others’ attention to, they don’t help us to ‘survive’ as actual or intended immigrants to France… nor do they give us any ‘hope’ really, do they?

professor tim wilson on Truss’ idiocy

Do things need to be new to draw attention to them?

I think we are in a battle for civilization as we know it, why not draw attention to the good things about it as well? I think it’s a good idea to build some bridges and establish some common ground, unless everything is doomed to be divisive. In addition to that. I do not think the ‘right’ have exclusive rights to nostalgia, although they have certainly weaponized it effectively.

Do political discussions about the UK enable us to ‘survive’ as immigrants to France? Affirming we are right in the choices we have made? Is that all it is?

I think a sense of conviviality can generate hope.

Are you saying Britain is a disposable “aircraft carrier [launching pad] off the coast of Europe”?

Ah… but teenagers haven’t been around long enough to have seen the other side in action.

well Karen, a bit like the Queen Elizabeth carrier which was reported to sink at sea with 200 litres of seawater/h pouring in and had to be pumped out at regular intervals

Only the Tory members. Not the M.P s

The question wasn’t whether particular political views are justified or not, but how popular the Tories really are - and the point is that, as @almondbiscuit said, nearly two-thirds of UK people that vote, don’t vote for them, about three-quarters of the whole electorate don’t vote for them, and maybe four-fifths of the whole population wouldn’t vote for them.

The fact is (as other surveys consistently show) the vast majority of people in the UK are far to the left of the Tories in their general social attitudes - indeed quite large majorities broadly agree with socialist policies, such as nationalisation of public utilities and transport.
This is indeed a sign of the hope that @almondbiscuit is looking for.

GBNews held a survey of their (10?, 20?) viewers concerning the PM candidates and voting intentions. You can read the results here.

The executive summary is priceless: "When asked to give one word they associated with Liz Truss, Brits’ top answer was “untrustworthy”,

Unfortunately for Ms Truss, second most popular answer was “useless”, with the even less flattering “idiot” in third."

“hasta la vista, baby…” were his parting words in the Commons…

which is why the Tories are so dangerous… they are “fixing” the boundaries to skew the vote in their favour and moving heaven and earth to make it more difficult for non Tory voters to vote,

Add dangerous to that.

I actually think this is BJ’s plan, lets face it Thick Lizzy really won’t last long which presumably is why BJ is backing here.
Im so glad i moved to France i can just watch the UK slip further into the mire from afar.

Unfortunately, that’s all well and good but there are many here who have family remaining in the UK for whom they have great concern and pension income derived from there…
It’s really pitiful to watch.
I wish it was the case that, as Brits born and bred, we could could be proud of our heritage but sadly, for the present at least, this cannot be the case until this awful regime is cast in to history (or prison or both).

I too have family in the UK and my teachers pension originates there so obviously I do have a keen interest in what happens. I just hope that people come to realise how truly awful this current bunch are and get rid of the lot 'em at the next election.

as an aside… do you get your TP paid in Euro by the provider? OH gets hers paid in GBP and we do the conversion (using Revolut) which, when we checked with others some time ago, seemed to be the better bet as the provider’s paying agent seems to take a slice…

I have my paid into a UK bank account and when the rate looks good use transferwise to move to my French account.

You’re a better man than me Gunga Din :slightly_smiling_face: I just can’t get over the bastards :frowning: I don’t criticise or complain about Britain as such, I just can’t see, read or hear about the dross in power without blowing a gasket. Sad, I suppose. Do you think I could get tablets for it?

BTW, typing this from here Google Maps before going ‘off grid’ for a few weeks, maybe that will cure me
