Internet radio recommendations?

I think we’re finally giving up the ghost on listening to the 3 stations that we can get on FM so is there a recommendation for an internet radio of choice? We have an Amazon echo but that seems to be becoming a bit hit and miss too.

Our listening includes UK, French and Flemish stations but a key requirement is also a relatively simple interface as Mrs H doesn’t really do tech.

Thanks in advance.

We use an Amazon device mostly. I listen to the French government? FranceInfo, Francen, FranceInter) stations and the BBC. For some stations you need to choose via a particular app like TuneIn. Once you have it set up, it’s fairly straightforward, and voice-activated of course.

I suspect radio is available via Apple Music, but I haven’t explored that.

We also have a BlueSound Node. The radio available via that is a very strange collection, but might be worth exploring.

Those 3 are in order of increasing fiddliness.

We have one of these in the kitchens

Unfortunately, madame refuses to talk to ours which doesn’t help. I think something with a bunch of presets is required.

The Pure kit has always had great reviews.

I remember buying a cheap internet radio a few years ago. The sound was great, but the interface and software were pants. Lesson learned.

Have you considered putting up a good old fashioned FM radio antenna to connect to a real radio ? I remember that one used to often see 50ft of thin bare copper wire (insulated with a wine cork at each end) strung from folks houses to a convenient tree. Must have worked or they wouldn’t have done it. My mum, being an avid radio listener, insisted on a proper FM aerial fitted high up on the gable end.

Just a thought.

I have bought 2 Karchers from Amazon.fr and, apart from the 2nd one going silent for a few seconds every now and again, am well pleased with them.

They both easily pick up all European stations as well as all UK ones and do have a preset facility.

Yes, I read that and couldn’t quite bring myself to it :joy:

I had and I think the time and expense would probably balance out, though I still wouldn’t get Flemish stations

Have a go with Radio Paradise ?

Mobile as a radio -

I listen to LBC radio live as I get ready in the morning; BBC news over breakfast; and enjoy Classic fm while reading my book in the afternoon. Occasionally, podcasts too. All online via wifi on my mobile plugged into a Bose speaker. Simples! I recommend :slightly_smiling_face:

Those were probably short wave antennae. FM is best with a 75 cm dipole antenna which gives 1/2 wavelength (approx) in total. Also, mount the dipole straight and vertical for best results. Most people never place the standard floppy dipole antenna you commonly get properly. A proper roof mounted whip dipole antenna would be best.

Radiodroid free and open source and very user friendly, I mainly use for Aussie classic rock channels. I should look at getting a better speaker.

Is that an app Tory ? Playstore offering something strangely named instead.

Yes but we don’t use play store as its google. I think it’s off F-droid (open source app store).

We like Radio Garden, developed by some dutch people. You just wander a globe and listen to radio from anywhere in the world.

The radio aerial on my parents house was quite large and in the shape of a vertical letter H. Worked just fine for stations such as Radio Luxembourg, Hilversum, and of course Radio Caroline.
