Hello everyone.
I never brought my dog over to France last year. Last time was the year before. She has a French passport which I got 2 or 3 summers back. Her rabies jab is up to August 2025. I had to get an AHC when she traveled on an English passport after brexit. I have looked on Google but didn’t see anything definite. We are traveling on 3 August.
I think you still have to get the worming done. Long time since ours travelled to UK but think we had to do it. And since your dog is “French” with a French address linked to his chip it certainly should have been done going into the UK so would be odd if nothing in the passport.
Vermifugation contre les ténias (praziquantel) pour les chiens uniquement, administrée par un vétérinaire (rubrique VII du Passeport), minimum 24h et maximum 120h avant l’arrivée
Coming to the UK worming was required. But it wasn’t needed going to France if my memory serves me right.
Interesting question… I agree with Jane…Assuming you’re living in the UK and bringing your dog back there after your visit to France (!), logically worming would be needed on re-entry … …Might it be worth phoning the Pet Passport office at (say) Eurotunnel - irrespective of whichever route you’re taking - and ask them, to get the view from the horse’s mouth as it were? They’re pretty clued up on the latest rules - for obvious reasons. I suspect ultimately you will need absolutely nothing official bar your dog’s French passport/ the worming.
Bon voyage and do let us know what happens…
The only wrinkle to doing that is that “ From 1 January 2021, EU pet passports issued to a pet owner resident in Great Britain are no longer valid for travel with pets from Great Britain to an EU country or Northern Ireland.”
So unless you are a legal French resident perhaps best not ask too many questions? Thinking about it again I’m not sure you can do anything anyway as a UK vet can’t make an entry into a EU passport now.
Our dog has a French PP and all we need to do is have him wormed in France before we re-enter the UK, his rabies jab is due again in 2026 and we’ll have that done in France to keep things simple.
UK pet passports are now obsolete. You need an AHC for each trip. That’s why I got a French one for her. A previous member had a good suggestion, ring the ferry port, I should have time tomorrow to try that.
Yes you need a worming treatment before travelling to the uk. Must be done a min of 24 hours before and a max of 5 days. You should be ok travelling back on your pet passport this time but most likely will need a AHC coming back for future visits. If You are long term in France again then your rabbies shot needs to be administered in France as certified vets are not trusted to carty it out although they are trusted to complete the AHC (stupid rule makers).
Our UK vet has her dog registered at her parents address in Paris despite travelling back to the UK she has so far been ok.
If you have a valid EU PP and all the jabs are up to date why do you need an AHC?
We know several holiday home owners who have obtained a PP in France since 2021 and don’t have any issues travelling to and from France.
I know about the worming coming back to UK. I will renew her rabies jab next year in France. In France the vets are a lot cheaper than my local one in Fulham. Rabies jab 20 Euro compared to 95 pounds.
Agree with a valid passport then no need for a AHC.
And as with many things there is what people do, and what the rules say! Which is why I personally wouldn’t ask the animal border control as the theory is that UK residents should not have an EU passport for their pet anymore.
So in thE OP’s circumstances I would do precisely nothing.
Sorry, being dim. What is an AHC?
Thanks for your replies. I was just worried I was forgetting something.
Another brexit benefit. Uk dogs have to have an animal health certificate to travel, which is expensive.
Do please post what happens as would be usedul for others in your position.
Animal health certificate, prices vary, most UK vets around £180-200 however we have found a vet very near the tunnel and as its just a paper exercise £63 for the 1st pet and £25 for the next. That applies after the 1st trip, otherwise £99 1st time.
Animal health certificate. 180 pounds.
I use the newhaven Dieppe ferry. Less driving both sides
Same here, just means a trip to Ashford but there are other vets starting to do the cut price AHC.
Two points, one ‘old’, one new…Old point first. Our French vet confirmed yesterday (my Aunt is visiting France with her 3 dogs who have French passports) what several posts above state. There is no requirement other than the UK’s tapeworm treatment, in either the UK or France, for a French pet passport holder, assuming the rabies vaccinations are up to date.
The ‘new’ point is that she reported problems some Brit clients with French pet passports had experienced this past week with Eurotunnel. The page to record each separate visit for the treatment for tapeworms is almost full. The passport contains a continuation page for precisely this scenario. However Eurotunnel objected to the latest visit being recorded on the continuation page even though it was signed, dated and stamped as usual by the vets. They presumably let the Brit family and dogs proceed but for some unearthly reason didn’t like the perfectly usual use of the new page in the passport.
I asked the vet what her advice would be for my aunt, since the page for tapeworm treatments is likewise almost full in her dogs passports. She advised asking Eurotunnel in advance what their future position is when my aunt crosses the border next week. If negative or doubtful, she will on my aunt’s next visit, issue new French passports (she’s allowed to issue new French passports to UK residents IF they already hold French pet passports, but not otherwise). However she said unfortunately my aunt would need to repeat the rabies treatment for a new passport since they can’t transfer over the existing validity of the current vaccination - each passport presumably has to be a stand alone record of vaccinations, without reference to other existing documents eg the current passport.
It seems Eurotunnel are making things up as they go along. Maybe somebody had a bad day at the office that day. However there really should be no reason to question the use of a continuation page that is there for precisely that reason
Good post George, years ago Eurotunnel said they would not accept our signed pet passport document as some piece of information had to be duplicated on to another page and re signed by our UK vet. The ferry companies however were perfectly fine with the passport as it was so eurotunnel have been quite fussy for some time.
