The temperature here is 33 degrees. We are indoors, shutters closed. Our gite guests are lying by the pool in full sun and have been for the last two weeks. ![]()
Have you checked that they are still breathing? ![]()
(Sorry Sue - couldn’t resist it…)
Angela beat me to it… ![]()
I was going to say… they must be cooked by now…
Ours have just returned from 60km bike ride….
I’ve been in a full bee suit for 12 hours, treating wasp and hornet nests in 38° so those sun lubbers can lubb the sun.
It gets a bit warm, but a nice cold shower has got me back to normal temperature.
You know when it’s hot when you drink 3 litres of water and no pee pee! ![]()
Careful Rob, much more water and it can bee toxic.
It got to 40°C here today and I did not see a single soul outside on this part of the estate, those not at work had the shutters down and aircon on most likely, I know I did. Came out of Lidl at 09.30 this morning and the heat was like opening the oven door. We have it again tomorrow. Like Rob, I seem to drink so much water but little pee, more in sweat. Anyone lying out in this needs their head sorting.
I’ve just tried to take my usual evening stroll… but, it’s too darn hot… makes breathing most uncomfortable… ![]()
so I sat on a bench just 10 metres from my front door…
but my neighbour came out and chastised me for my foolishness and sent me scuttling home… well, hardly scuttling…
![]()
Look what happend last time you scuttled ![]()
The thing is, if you’re on holiday, no need to do more than eat, drink and lay about then 35+ degrees is not a problem and even 40 if you have a pool or the sea close. It’s much tougher trying to lead a normal life in such heat.
You live in the most unique place @Stella, I can’t quite imagine what it must be like, I’d love to visit one day just to experience it in person ![]()
I’ll quite happily send my neighbour to chastise you… if you really want me to…
![]()
If you do it while I’m asking questions at your Mairie I can make it a twofer! Yesssss, this is all coming together nicely ![]()
![]()
If you cover up and make sure you can stay hydrated it’s manageable. I’ve done plenty of hikes and mtb rides in the 30’s. In fact if I waited for cooler weather here I could wait a very long time and never get out ![]()
At age73 and 68 with three replacement hips between them, and recovering from brain tumour op? (The 68 yo does have electrically assisted bike, he doesn’t).
I used to be fine in heat until I hit 55.
Been inside all day apart from adding things to the pool (salt). Too hot for any thoughts of being outside in the sun - i know holiday makers are on holiday but do they not realise the dangers of such high UV ?
Well, folk are gradually appearing on their doorsteps now …
As might be expected, the topic of discussion… today’s peak temperatures and what we can expect tomorrow…
OH has planned to do an emergency run to the shops early tomorrow… to replenish the icecream stocks plus anything else we decide we can’t live without… and he’s gathering a small shopping list from our immediate neighbours.
They rally round whenever he’s ill, so it’s nice to be able to repay their kindnesses.
All windows are open wide, in the hope of cooler air overnight… ![]()
(our mozzie mesh is firmly in place)
night, night everyone…
35C here today, sent the day strimming, cutting grass and cutting hedges, working with glass furnaces for 35 years means compared with 60-120C , 35C is a doddle.
La Poste lady keeps on telling the local shopkeeper that the mad Scotsman was at it again cutting grass at midday, he is totally nuts ![]()

We are heading back to Scotland on Thursday, sun and 35C won’t be a problem then ![]()

We have a hiking group that meets every Weds; about six years ago, when the temp was going to be around 40° I blithely suggested a particular 12km walk that involved a 550m ascent followed by an hour and a bit walking along a ridge in full sun. Only two others pitched up that day, plus a German shepherd in his prime. It wa OK, yet today, a walk like that would appal me, even though I’m now actually more fit. One doesn’t need to struggle!
This Weds when it’s again going to be around 40° OH, self and Gigi are just doing a 9km walk through the forest alongside the Lot that we do once or twice a week (with a halfway stop at the auberge - une noisette for madam et pour moi, un pastis). So far the only other person from the group who’s joining us also did the previous far more arduous 40° walk, but at the start of this year broke her back! Eight months on, she’s recently shed her temporary exo-skeleton and is raring to go on a level walk. Just hope we don’t end up carrying her!
I never sunbathe and keep out of the sun wherever possible, but yesterday was so hot in the house that I am surprised that I didn’t think to put the climas on for the first time this year.
This morning when I got up at 7.30 I couldn’t believe how hot the house was so did put them both on, set to 21 C. What a relief and the improvement was almost instantaneous. That settles it, no more giant fan in Fran’s room for me to keep tripping over.
My exercise is all in the pond, I don’t even use the trike in this heat, and have taken to coming down from each session without toweling off the water from my skin. Yesterday I did 184 metres over several sessions, the last one with Hissing Sid racing across the surface in terror. ![]()
Also, I have discovered that if I float on my back with my head resting on the end strap (no bars on a pond) I can relax in the cool for a bit longer. ![]()
