Jimmy Kimmel has beaten off Trump assaults twice

Go Jimmy, go.. :slightly_smiling_face:

The comedians seem to be the only ones holding Trump and his minions to account.

“More power to his elbow” is what I say. Let’s face it, when it comes to Trump one either has to laugh or cry, and crying just makes a person sad.

If you classed Jimmy Kimmel as a comedian, Chris.

We used to watch his late night show when we were in California but it was a laugh on a rare occasion. Probably similar to other American comedians. Except for Seinfeld who was on and at his peak at that time. Plus the rest of the group, especially George, who all suffered after the demise of his show. None were able to further their career much

i can’t say I am a fan as such but as I mentioned he (and others like Stephen Colbert) are at least not providing the Orange One with wall-to-wall worship.

Agree with you on that point! Trump being a loose cannon.

ABC, which hosts Jimmy Kimmel, is fighting against Trump and the FCCs attempt to censor and intimidate broadcasters in the US.

Good for them. I hope they hold out.

it’s yet another illustration of the extreme fragility of Trump’s ego that he lets a late-night comedian’s comments bother him.

Or it may be because he knows that the negative comments about him are true.

I suppose it’s all about ratings, too.

But assaults? Insults, obviously.

Trump tries to use the mechanisms of Government, such as the FCC, to stifle legitimate comment and satirical comedy.

Those are assaults on civil liberty and free speech, and deserve to be taken seriously even if they don’t succeed. The way America is going, the intent to quell all dissent and deviation from the wishes of the Great Leader is clearly there.

That’s stretching things.

Not really. If you put it all together with the gerrymandering, the way Trump ignores Congress, the use of uncontrolled force via ICE to arrest and deport people who are in the US legally, the politicisation of the Supreme Court and other bodies, and the requirements for foreign visitors to give Homeland Security access to their social media posts and a list of their friends and family, Trump and his backers are following the classic authoritarian playbook, just as a certain Austrian gentleman did in the 1930s.

So on that basis, how would you distinguish a real assault - physical contact - from one merely involving words?

The word “assault” can have a metaphorical meaning, it’s not just reserved for actual physical attacks.

The phrase “a verbal assault” is in common use. And yes, I would describe a physical assault as “a physical assault”.

Sticks and stones may break my bones but if you say anything that challenges my beliefs, that really hurts!

My apologies, Lord @Porridge, I had no wish to make an assault upon your long-held personal philosophy.
