Lol…it does seem to be getting increasingly difficult for any ‘powers that think they are’ to put people in boxes and keep them there for any length of time…
been down any cemeteries recently?
Well yeah that might shut some of us up for a bit…and uk government stockpiling body bags…getting ready for Brexit…!
Although I don’t live in France I gave this some thought a couple of years ago (pre referendum) - should I make a longer term move to France, would I seek citizenship?
I decided that I would not- I could not see a point in time where I would want to be “French” - I am a Doncastarian and a Yorkshireman (yes, yes, I know that it is a peculiarity of natives of our county to identify as such) and, I hope, a gentleman.
I am no longer quite so sure that I would not seek French nationality if I ultimately choose to retire to France, even if it meant relinquishing British nationality (although I believe that the French do not require this, even if we were a 3rd nation).
I believe you could apply that statement to most of the members.
You can’t really call us part time as one of 5 countries who pay in and support 23 others in the union.
If the likes of Italy and Greece actually paid their taxes they wouldn’t be in such a mess, they are more part time than the Uk.
The Uk is one country who follows the rules to the T unlike many others including France who who what they wish , without ever getting punished.
I’m not replying to comments, just my honest opinion.
And my honest opinion is that you totally miss the point about Europe.
Yes oh yes, gorblimey poor honest John Bull who pays for the whole shebang being swizzled and given the run-around by cheating Johnny foreigner with his dishonest un-English ways and his natural forrin untrustworthiness and ability to weasel forrinly out of anything.
It’s all true I saw it on the side of a bus.
I tend to agree the UK has not fully embraced Europe.
UK is not in Schengen Zone.
UK has not switched to Euro.
UK has only partly moved to metric measurement which leave the worst possible position of part imperial part metric.
UK still drive on left.
There must be other things also.
I would not be concerned if all of the above were changed in UK - driving on right would be a tricky expensive one to address!
If this was a real dinner party, Véronique, I’d definitely invite you and Barrie - it’d be a hoot!
Might not use my best crockery though.
Yes we are and proud of it, they only want us for our money and to fight their wars!
The French under Charles de Gaulle blocked us from joining for many years.
Proud of what?
As is suggested - welcome to our community, now that is over - stop talking bollocks.
Your post certainly strengthens my resolve to want to remain in EU.
hummm like in NATO?
NATO’s primary purpose was to defend member nations from threats by communist countries. The United States also wanted to maintain a presence in Europe. It sought to prevent a resurgence of aggressive nationalism and foster political union. In this way, NATO made the formation of the European Union possible.
Further reaading:
- Chapter 1 United Nations treaty
Somewhere in all the mix is a condition that an aggression against one nation is an aggression against them all - doesn’t that mean that the UK will be fighting some-one else’s war? Dohhhh
Several EU countries have not switched to the Euro, Ireland still drives on the left and try getting through passport control here without a passport even when flying from any Schengen member country or one of France’s outside departments, I’ll let you have the metric one.
Hi Tim - I am not saying we should do all or any of the above but I think it does show that we haven’t exactly embraced the EU.
Mat, I think if you look deep enough most EU countries have not immersed themselves 100% and several including France often choose to ignore or flout the club rules to suit themselves. I think what Juncker was getting at was that the UK has never entered into the ‘spirit’ of being European and I doubt they ever will.
I think it is all in the translation @tim17
English is not Juncker’s first language - he does very well with it but there the subtle nuances of English can sometimes be lost when expressed by others.
I am assuming it is a full moon.
You should be grateful to him, surely?
Where do you live, Anthony?
