My mate, uk resident but with a holiday home in France, allowed his insurance to laspe on his French reg car, now it seems that no insurance company will cover him (so far contacted), he appears to be “banned”. The car is currently in the UK and he was intending to drive it back - (it’s had a sort of much delayed rebuild in the UK). Is there where can he insure this car? and how long might this ban last?
Probably a question for our resident insurance expert @fabien
Hi, it depends on the driver license he holds. With a French registered vehicle and a French address this should be doable with a driving license that has been secured pre Brexit. If it’s another non British and non EU license it’s a whole different story though. Also it depends on the reason for the policy cancellation. If he didn’t pay the renewal premium they won’t see that as the policy being cancelled but as the policy being terminated by the insurance for lack of payment which leaves a trail in the central insurer’s database and make subsequent premiums more expensive. Also, it depends on how long the insurance gap has been, more than 6 months would complexify everything. At the end of the day if the situation is legal there is always a solution but the more issues on the history the higher the premium might be. I have never encountered a French vehicle insurance policy that lasps, or even lapses. Normally they have to be cancelled, and the cancellation request has to be done correctly or it will not be accepted.
I suspect your mate has outstanding debts for a year’s policy that remained in force because he did not cancel it.
