Good. ![]()
More memory, it was always my job while the aides were here with Fran in the mornings, to make a bowl of porridge for her, I have tried it recently but canât get the consistancy right to my taste, but worth a try again. ![]()
I always weigh it, though my NI friends could do it by eye.
I use 1:5.
50g of porridge, 250g (or ml) of water or milk-and-water.
You could add some seeds and nuts, and serve it with cream and honey, though you may be more Spartan than that!
No, not Spartan at all. but the proof of the pu/porridge will be in the eating. Iâll try in the morning if this âorrible concoction at the bar this evening does ruin me even more.
Cooking for one is never as interesting. I have a friend whoâs lived alone most of her adult life and she batch cooks and then freezes portions to reheat later.
You can pack a lot of nutrition into a soup that need not be hard to make, especially if you have a kitchen ârobotâ and itâs easy to consume calories that way without really noticing.
I love cooking for one!
It means I get exactly what I want. Mainly cauliflower or broccoli cheese. ![]()
Nice. Have you ever tried cauliflower and broccoli cheese? Itâs delicious.
Well I do do that in a way from time to time with my periodic Beef Bourgignons in the slow cooker, but I donât freeze the results I divide half a kilo of the meat when I get it home and freeze them for use individually later. I have at least 15 little bottles of various herbs and spices and I put a bit of everything in along with as much veg as I have and cook the lot for 8 hours.
First meal with it is the same evening then I keep the rest in the fridge to have it on alternate days âtill itâs done, but even that has not tasted so good this last time. Funny thing is because of Franâs alcoholism I refrained from bourgignon in the bourgignon for years and after she left I still used to forget and now, along with everything else, alcohol is not high on my list I donât use it still. Even my chabrol whenever I have soup doesnât taste as good as it used to. But I still manage a drop of Calvados in my little coffee at the end of the meal and a kir before hand, but a flea wouldnât get drunk on the booze involved there. ![]()
Well if anyone on here knows how to make porridge it should be you! ![]()
Yes and it is delicious. In fact you can add anything to cauliflower and make it different, its the cheese sauce that makes it! The same with macaroni cheese that my daughter does for thanksgiving has dried crispy onions on the top as is the trad way in Tennessee.
Well, itâs 8.40 on Sunday morning and Iâve just finished my first coffee, but the thought of food just repels me so I will not be trying the recipe for some time yet.
A good night with a noisy crowd last night and my meal consisted of melted camembert in a small dish of which I consumed half. Eddie and Marian had enormous planches of all sorts of meat, but much of it went into a black bag I took for the purpose and is now in the fridge for the dogs later.
They had to come with me because I have not found the spot where Hades gets out to follow me yet, (got a good idea and a 20 metre section of fencing will be improved later) but they are happy together in the large space created after I took the cage out. As we left for home E & M came to the car to be made a fuss of. ![]()
Hey David, have you thought about foods that smell great when theyâre cooking to get the saliva & hunger pang going, like roast chicken, bacon frying in the pan or jewish penicillin a great tasty chicken soup that cures all evils & fills the belly.
I have thought of them, but havenât so far found them. The soup choices in the supermarkets are not great, the latest I bought is in little boxes and indicates 200ml of boiling water added to the powder, stirred vigorously and then left to stand for 2 minutes, but the result was very weak and uninteresting. I tried using less water to make it stronger but that of course just reduces the quantity.
Something I bought on a whim from the market on Sunday was a whole beetroot which I really lusted after back at home sprinkling salt and salad cream and eating it with crisps. I did enjoy that but mainly I suspect because it was so salty and not sure is very good for me.
The ready-made soups in cartons and glass bottles are pretty nice these days. Even Utile own brand has some good flavours. I donât do well with powdered soup either.
Shopping day today, Iâll be continueing my search but this new Super U, despite squeezing more aisles into the same space does not seem to have the same amount of choice as the old Auchan.
Oh, and another thing, the paper bags provided for veg are split open down one side, I am told just for lettuce but I had a helluva job keeping other stuff in. Not bothered because I have already decided to restrict veg and fruit to the Sunday market from now on.
They usually provide both David
There are some filmy green bags on a roll apparently which everything other than lettuce is supposed to go in. Wonât trouble me, Iâm boycotting the place and will use the market man in future. One exception today, I saw a box of black grapes and on a whim dropped them in the trolly. They are so sweet and juicy I canât stop eating them now.

Well at least youâre eating something!
Good work that man!
On posting something completely different this morning I noticed a telling thing related to the point of this thread.
In the Dog Photos Only thread the 2nd photo down of Lira the Greyhound quite clearly shows the days before the neighbours took up residence of their rented house, with our gravel drive clearly leading to the assumed by everyone else, including notaire and agent, the entrance to our own property.
If push comes to shove that may or may not be significant. ![]()
