« Life-affirming » novel

Just starting a sample of a book described as « life-affirming ».

I may be alone in this, but it’s a description I find empty and lazy. Not quite as bad as « heart-warming », or a book being one of a series, but almost.

It’s probably a “New York Times Bestseller”.

Even though it was published last Thursday.

That’s how I feel about the Hitch Hikers Guide trilogy.

May be try Ben Okri The famished Road or Sam Browne Dangerous Parking.

But yes, there is so much over dramatic language used.

I could go on and on and on and on about the incorrect use of “exponential growth” when the data shows the growth is nowhere near exponential.

Strange.

If you are listening to Radio Paradise’s Mellow Mix, Journey of the Sorcerer was just played.

I enjoyed the radio series much more than the books.

I should have put a wink smilie on that comment, although if you’ve read the series you know the 5th book has a miserable ending.

Life can be miserable. I love the quote “The Guide says there is an art to flying", said Ford, "or rather a knack. The knack lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss.” My partner is a pilot, but she gets really angry when I call her a bus driver, an Airbus driver.

Try the Famished Road, at first I had nightmares, but at the end I really enjoyed it.
Apparently it was the inspiration to Radiohead’s Street Spirit (Fade Out).

I’m presently reading the books from Larry Niven that I missed over the years.

The problem with THHGTTG is that it was written as a trilogy, but as with all things that are successful it wasn’t allowed to stop there, and an increasingly grumpy Douglas Adams, running out of good ideas, made the 5th book sufficiently unenjoyable to ensure he wasn’t asked for a 6th. The incorporation of Stavro Muller Beta into the finale showed a little bit of desperate shoe-horning.

I thought taking a year out dead for tax purposes was a rather smart move.

And a simple one that makes no sense but comes up often… a massive hole.

I expect it’s also extremely unique.

Enjoy it, see it as an antidote to anything one reads in the press these days. It’ll need to be a strong antidote though.

I am not sure I understand your reply. Do you refer to the Adams quote or the Famished Toad reference?
