Looking for a British carer in the Haute Savoie

Hello

I am looking for an English speaking carer for my husband when I am travelling. This would be a live-in position for a couple of weeks from time to time. My husband who is 74 has memory issues and day to day life on his own is becoming more difficult.

Hi, welcome to the forum.

Maybe you could tell us more about the work that you’re offering, like what assistance your husband needs day to day? Are you expecting 24 hour cover for the two weeks? If you do, that would normally need a team of people.

And the hourly rate would be a consideration.

Have you been in contact with your Assistant Sociale? Even with a carer popping in perhaps it’s safer if he goes into a care home on a temporary basis. Some do this to give the main carer respite.

Contact your assistante sociale (as Jane said) they may have people on hand who speak English. Another advantage is they will be qualified, vetted, registered, insured etc and you’ll be en règle.

I hadn’t heard of an assistante sociale (is it always a lady?) until I started viewing this forum regularly. I don’t need one but for future reference for us or friends, how do you contact one please? Google seems to say the mairie or CPAM but there are a couple of other numbers as well.

The Mairie is your first port of contact, normally the ASs visit once a fortnight and you will be given a rdv. My own experience of them was not good, I arrived 20 minutes before rdv time and sat there through it as it came and went. A woman came and sat down and I asked what was her rdv time and it turned out that she was late but still after my time. Another half hour passed and finally the door opened and the AS indicated that this woman should come in before me. I protested, having been there for over an hour but she insisted. So I walked out.

Made no difference to all the excellent help we got for my wife over 2 years though.

Talk to your mairie in first instance. They hold the ring although others involved.

Peggy, are you and your husband French residents and do you pay tax here? I imagine you know about the Césu site and the tax relief you can get on things like care?

Yes I am now French and we have lived here for 45 years. Yes I have garden and home help via Cesu. Great system!
