Looking for auto gear box "commutateur"

We have a 1997 E class merc whose auto gearbox is stuck in first gear.

Our merc garage says the gear box “commutateur” needs replacing but the spare part is so old it is no longer carried. Anyone any suggestions please whether we might be able to find the spare on a second hand spare parts website?

We don’t know what we are looking for. Grateful for any thoughts/suggestions, thanks.

Are these breakers any use?

Thanks Mat. Yes it is, but sadly looks like they don’t have anything.

Have you tried an auto gearbox specialist? They will be much more au fait with repairing and sourcing alternative parts than a main dealer.

There are many of them around - you could, for example, try these people… - or just Google “Spécialistes des boîtes de vitesses automatiques” adding your preferred location.

Thanks Brian.

If I remember rightly this will be the Mercedes 5G-Tronic or NAG1 5 speed gearbox, it was used in Mercedes, Chrysler, Jeep, Jaguar so you really need them to give you a part number so you can find one, it actually should not be to difficult.

You could try OVOKO.FR - claiming to be trans European. They came up with a tricky to find hinge for my v. ancient X-Trail. It arrived from a Latvian breakers, having been posted in Estonia (or vice versa!). As new, and one twenty-third of the local Nissan dealer’s quote. Postage €12. Their catalogue is extensive. I find French garages are loathe to look beyond their local parts store, and certainly not for obsolete parts.

The saga continues with the merc garage, not worth going into detail. For the second time they have returned it to us supposedly properly fixed and we now have a warning light (BAS/ASR) come on which we have never seen before, an engine temperature gauge that no longer works and (really bizarrely) the cover for the fuel inlet that is now stuck shut! Really not great when the technicians at the garage been test driving the car supposedly to chek it’s all working properly and left us with only a quarter tank.
Any thoughts anyone please? Other than never going back to that garage obviously.

Its something to do with stability/anti skid/brake assistance, but these things can happen if the battery has a low charge. Might be worth charging overnight to see if it clears the problems before taking it back.

Possibly disconnecting the battery for 30mins, reconnecting without switching it on for 30mins to let it start up a fresh and remove any faults.

The rest of the issues fuel flap etc they should fix that. You should have to pay again.
