Looking for Guidance on Adapting to French Life as New Immigrant

Hello Everyone :hugs:,

I recently relocated from New York to France. I’ve been in this wonderful country for about six months, and although I’m enjoying its natural beauty and rich culture, I’m finding the assimilation process to be a little difficult. Any advise or pointers via those of you that have made this change successfully would be highly appreciated.

Here are a few particular topics I’d need advice on:

Language Disturbance: Even with my French studies, I still find it difficult to carry in casual discussions. How did you get better at language? Which tools or methods have you found to be most useful?

Social Integration: It has taken a while to establish friends and a social network. What are some effective methods for making new friends and establishing deep connections? Are there any expat-friendly local organisations or events?

Cultural Differences: I have yet to become used to a lot of the little cultural quirks. Which cultural rules of conduct are particularly crucial for me to know in order to prevent making any awkward social mistakes?

Getting Around Bureaucracy Here, the amount of paperwork and bureaucracy can be very burdensome. Any advice on how to handle administrative duties like arranging for utilities, taking care of medical needs, or managing immigration requirements?

Life Advice: Do you have any general suggestions for improving the ease and enjoyment of daily living? This could include anything from advice on where to shop to suggestions for nearby businesses or secret treasures that only locals are aware of.

Thank you  in advance.

Depends on where you live. Much easier to integrate/try to speak french/learn the culture out of the cities and large towns. Villages and small towns have a wealth of clubs, activities, events and just general more friendliness towards foreigners than being in a big town or city. Years ago I got told off for saying bonjour to other pedestrians we were meeting on the pavements as it was just not done outside of the countryside villages and communes. Ask questions on forums such as this one, people will help with their own experiences and proper information and the rest, as they say, is downto you to investigate and try. When we came 35 years ago to buy a house, there was no internet and we had to do it all by finding out by ourselves, getting very frustrated but not giving up - paid dividends eventually and for the years after that.

Since you don’t say whereabout in France you are it is hard to provide meaningful answers to some of your questions. Especially open ended ones like life advice.

So apologies if untrue, but it makes me think that maybe all you actually want is traffic to the link?

Or ideas for writing an article. (Fair enough.)

Be careful not to be too enthusiastic with bisous, the cheek to cheek kissing. Easier for a female but nevertheless a fine line between acceptance and offence. A golden rule to start with is always allow others to make the first move, once that is done you know where you stand.

Otherwise @Shiba 's advice is good regarding the diffrence in culture between city and country.

Hello Jesica and welcome to the forum…

Having read your list of topics on which you need advice …
I reckon you should take the time to browse through the various Categories and numerous Threads which are to be found here, on the SF Forum…

I reckon each of your queries has already been asked (in various formats) and answered (thoroughly) by many, many people.

Happy browsing… :+1:

One way to help with language is to think if you can say what you need to in a more simple way.

Does the full stack developer speak English natively ? The bio would suggest not, and the very dodgy little link you tried to shove on the end of the millenialabroad.com is unbecoming of a new member.

Troll/scammer/spammer/account harvester ?

Yep - this.

Trying to garner SF’s reputation to bump their dodgy link selling whatever they’re selling up Google’s search results.

@james this looks iffy - any chance it can be removed ?

Practice speaking.

Speak to people.

Be polite. Smile.

Be patient. Copy all documents in triplicate. View bureaucracy as a challenging game, and get stuck in.

“Don’t sweat the small stuff.”
