Has anybody come across this or used it. ? A relative came to us with a dongle which he plugged in to the tv. We were then able to watch all manner of things, including Sky Sports and TNT Sports (latterly BT). As you know if it seems too good to be true, it probably is. An internet search reveals very little.
Almost certainly pirate IPTV (Internet Protocol Television ). There have been a few suppliers arrested recently but I’ve never heard of any difficulties for end users so it’s really a question for your personal moral compass.
Haha, aren’t you an ex-copper, @plod? Your friend was very brave
Takes one to catch one
Gamekeeper turned poacher!
Nah, they never stop being poachers.
Probably an Amazon firstick . Some info here. Note the VPN.
The VPN thing is just a bit of scaremongering to get a sale and the site owner gets commission.
I seem to recall that it matters which country a firestick is bought in to get UK channels?
No, it’s the country where you have your Amazon account.
Personal experience tells me that neither of the above are true.
We have a Firestick, bought in France that uses a FR account but we can access the likes of iPlayer, ITVX etc. via a VPN on the device.
The VPN will aways be necessary outside of the UK.
You’re right. When I moved my account from Amazon UK to Amazon France it didn’t offer me any UK apps but when I try now it works. Maybe I’m just losing the plot
How do you set up a VPN on a fire stick? Sorry I dont own one so asking for a relative.
I don’t think it’s a Firestick. My subsequent enquiries lead me to believe I should avoid it.
Download them from the app store
How too install google playstore on Fire devices https://www.androidpolice.com/install-play-store-amazon-fire-tablet/#what-to-know-before-you-start
Alternatively a safe apk store similar to google play is apkmirror https://www.androidpolice.com/2020/08/14/how-to-download-apps-without-the-play-store-and-why-apkmirror-is-the-best-place-to-get-them/
Yep, as @chrisell says, you can install apps just like on a smartphone.
The FireStick is just running a customised version of Android. Amazon lock it down slightly, but they also allow you to easily enable Developer Mode which then allows you to install apps from any source, so as long as you can download the .apk file from somewhere then you’re largely able to install any app you like (assuming the app is compatible with the FireStick and the FireStick has enough resources to run it).
Thank you both for the explanation, I will try it next time I am in France at the relatives place
Might not even need the F/stick. Depends on the model of the TV.
I was mighty pleased to find that my 2020 model of Philips TV included Surfshark [a VPN] in the list of bundled apps. I already had a Surfshark a/c for this laptop so logged in to my a/c on the TV and - SHAZZAM! - iPlayer, ITVX, More 4 et al. - jus’ like that!
Cant remember what the rely’s have but it was awkward trying to setup the VPN on that after many attempts I gave up. They have a firestick as I said not played with those before but this type of thing is a great way for me to waste a day playing!
