Make your own planks

Hello all.

We’re in the process of renovating house 2 which came with its own woodland.

Part of the work required is to lay new flooring throughout. We thought that it might be a nice touch to use our own trees for this but have no idea where to begin…

A few questions :

  1. Would it be cost effective?
  2. which would be the best wood to use?
  3. How soon could we use it( the wood is currently in the forum of living trees)
  4. Are there any other considerations?

We have a lumber yard within 10km who we know cut planks as they’ve recently cut some pine for a neighbour.

I’d be keen to know your thoughts.

    Regards

1 Only your wood yard could tell you.

2 Oak, beech.

3 Depends if you pay for kiln drying, other wise air drying could take as long as it takes to get the moisture content down.

4 you'll loose some to twisting bowing and shake so you need a lot more than you think

I once did it with some oak. You have to get the trees sliced up, leave with spacers between to dry out & then get them sawn & planed. It takes along time dependant on the tree & it ain't cheap !
