That is actually what I find most worrying, some very unsavoury and dangerous groups instrumentalising people’s fairly legitimate concerns, fostering paranoia and conspiracy theories and encouraging violence. Very much what happened at the Capitol after the US elections.
Bouncy castles in Ottawa are just a smokescreen frankly. When you look at the political groups advocating vaccine refusal etc they are practically all swivel-eyed extremists who make noises about freedom but only on their terms and see violence as a legitimate response to anything.
I really don’t like what the veneer of cliché-ed sentimental yoghurt-knitting hippiedom is covering and I find it very ironic that people should be so mad keen on seeing conspiracy everywhere when they are being manipulated themselves. Barking up the wrong tree.
It all started out with truck drivers - to get across the Canadian/US border from either side - having to proof vaccine status.
And throwing a tantrum. soon the anti vaxxers joined in and then all the other ‘freedom’ fighters. To a point where ordinary citizens have their daily life severely interrupted.
It will end in tears…
This protest cannot be compared to the Suffragette movement - or Greenham Common. Or any peaceful march in support of a cause.
I so agree.
I must admit I haven’t been following this story - but have just read The Guardian account of who’s behind it:
Canada Unity, which operates as an umbrella organization for many of the protesters, is collecting signatures for its “memorandum of understanding”, a document that demands the Canadian government rescind all vaccine requirements or “RESIGN their lawful positions of authority immediately”.
The group’s founder, James Bauder – who has written on Facebook that Canada’s prime minister, Justin Trudeau, ought to be tried for treason, and who has endorsed the baseless QAnon conspiracy theory – insists that, should the document get enough signatures, an election will be triggered.
Joining Canada Unity is a motley crew of anti-vaccine and rightwing activists. Tamara Lich, who has coordinated a wildly successful GoFundMe, and Pat King, who has coordinated with many of the truckers, were involved in efforts to declare the oil-rich Western provinces’ independence from Canada.
Others who have latched on to the movement include QAnon figure Romana Didulo, the self-proclaimed “Queen of Canada”.
Speakers and protesters have rejected the science behind vaccines, called for Trudeau’s arrest and trial, and waved Nazi and confederate flags.
@Geof_Cox
Oh let them all just walk into the sea, ghastly people.
I dont want them poluting our oceans
That reporting is really skewed and attempts to throw everyone under one banner….I find it really sad but it also makes me furious at the same time…it’s propaganda and an msm smear campaign…
Pat King is First Nation…Tamara Lich is so pure of heart that the the only way msm can deal with her is to attack….
Has anyone actually listened to Pat King on his livestreams….??? Or Tamara Lich…???
Health should be above politics surely…???
(Edited to add that I have close family in Ontario and Alberta and a nephew and his wife in Brazil…and several in the Canadian airforce
Plus extended family in New Zealand and Australia and all of them vaccinated or not are pro choice and pro freedom)

Have you read what anti vax protesters have been doing on the streets of London?
Attacking Sir Keir Starmer and David Lammy in the streets, calling them traitors and of protecting paedophiles.
Your ideology has been over run by the extreme right in the USA and it is starting to happen in UK.
When you start with a false prophet, you unleash all kinds of consequences, intended or not.
That will be received understood and totally ignored as usual
I don’t think Dr Alexander sees it that way.
I cannot write the words I used yesterday towards an anti vaxer who foolishly approached me at a london station yesterday.
I have watched a couple of his videos and he seems a very sensible down to earth character. His video on the BMJ being fact checked by Facebook was particularly good
This is from today’s local newspaper and relates to current hospitalisations in the Charente Maritime -
‘‘80 % des réanimations concernent des personnes non vaccinées’’
Clearly vaccination can and does prevent serious illness.
I think antivaxxers are a bit like young-earth creationists in that it doesn’t matter what your arguments are, you are dealing with faith and emotion and so there’s no point discussing after a bit, you aren’t in the realm of the rational any more.
I think it is marvellous vaccination stops most people from getting a bad dose of COVID.
It is marvelous isn’t it and hopefully the different mutations of the virus will keep getting less virulent and we can get back to some sort of normality.
Both the omicron strains are doing exactly that, our ticket back to normality
As long as the next mutation doesn’t go the other way, anything is possible.
It sounds from all the sources that the shear transmissibility of the omicron strains they will out compete the others and they have. We were very lucky this happened so quickly and why its good not to lockdown now unless you have a medical reason to do so and even then its having far less effect
