I’ve bought some matt varnish to go on our kitchen doors but just looking at the tin with my glasses on 
it says wood but nothing about going over paint. Am I over thinking this? The only bit in the instructions is what to do if your wood is bare and not already traité. Any thoughts?
Try it on a little patch that doesn’t matter if the finish isn’t great, just in case it reacts badly with the paint already on there. If it’s water-based then unlikely there will be a problem, but if solvent based then it might affect the paint below.

They are both the same brand and both water based. Good idea, I’ll do a patch on the back at the bottom of one of the doors
