With the introduction of toll-booth free motorways we are thinking about getting a télépéage badge, not because we use the toll roads a lot but because when we do the idea of having to pay online within a deadline (or worse still, forgetting to pay) makes the whole journey less appealing! Has anyone got any suggestions for good options, ideally that only charge a fee when you use the toll rather than an annual subscription. We have found Bip&Go, Fulli and Ulys. Any other recommendation?
Many thanks.
Its only a very small anual fee if not using it.
I use Bip n Go.
We’re onto our second transponder. We returned the first, by post, from the UK. Still on the original 30€ deposit.
They charge only for the months you use it, 2€/m.
Never had any problems. I believe they can charge it to a UK credit card in certain circumstances.
I think Bip and go still has the offerof 14 months free and €1.90 a month if you use it.
Lidl Plus app has 14 months free sub on Ulis still but I think its end date to sign up is within a few weeks. Briefly during the summer it was even 17 weeks.
I’m with BipAndGo now (having previously had an account with SANEF’s UK offshoot Emovis) as it’s a bit cheaper and I can pay in Euros from my Wise account.
There wasn’t that much in it cost-wise but I decided I’d rather Euro-ise myself in anticipation of moving to France permanently in a year or few.
If you want to pay in UKP then Emovis is probably easier.
BipandGo is €10 upfront, and then €1.90 per month when you use the system, plus the cost of tolls obviously.
Or they have a “frequent user” deal which is €16 a year plus €1.33 a month.
Emovis is great if you have a U.K. address, U.K. registered vehicle and a U.K. bank account.
They weren’t interested when I told them I’d moved to France and wanted to be billed in Euros from a French bank account.
Have 2 tags on a Ulys Classic account now - €2 a month fee on top of any toll charges when I use it, nowt when I don’t.
Yes, the Bippers were happy for me to have a UK address and a (Belgian) Wise IBAN number for payment!
You can actually set up an account with the motorway operator online and you will be automatically debited whenever you pass the toll gate…no annual fee at all. This is the case if you’re resident in france…not sure it works for overseas residents.
I’m not seeing an option to sign up for an account without having an electronic tag, at least on SANEF, Ulys and APRR. Where are you seeing this option?
And does that mean you have to have a separate account with each operator - i.e. ALIS, Sanef, Ulys, APRR etc?
With the bippy things they work with all the operators’ toll plazas, and also in Italy Spain and Portugal if you get the appropriate gadget.
There’s no annual fee with BipAndGo or Ulys - just a monthly fee when you actually use the tag.
If you use it every month, that’s just under 36€ a year, compared to just under 23€ for an infrequent user?
My mistake - I misread the website - it’s €1.33 a month x 12, paid on an annual basis i.e. €16 for the whole year, not €16 plus €1.33 a month…
Hi All,
I’m wondering if anyone knows of a telepeage tag/dongle provider that does not penalise you for NOT using the device. I had a Ulys tag…if I didn’t use it at least once in a 15 month period they charged me €15.
I would be happy paying a higher usage fee per day/month if they dropped the non-use penalty!
Cheers, Dave
There’s nothing on the current Ulys website about a charge for non-use - perhaps they’ve dropped that now?
BipandGo do charge ten bucks if you don’t use the tag within a 14 month period.
Ulys don’t have a sign-up fee so you could cancel your tag and send it back if you don’t plan to come to France for a year or more, then get a new one when you do.
Although personally I would pay the ten euros not to have the hassle of doing that; YMMV.
I vaguely remember Ulys (I’ve got their bipper) do levy a charge if the badge isn’t used for 12 months, but I can’t remember how much it is, and can’t find anything on their website.
Hi - here’s the link for SANEF: How do I create a customer account to pay free-flow tolls? | sanef
You don’t need any kind of tag but you must be the owner or ‘main driver’ of the car. You need to supply debit card details and attach the registration certificate. Indeed you’ll need separate accounts for each operator which is something of a pain in the derrière at first, but once it’s all set up there should be nothing further to do and you won’t be subject to any monthly fee just for using the service.
Does that work for tolls on non-SANEF autoroutes?
And does it require a French bank account?
As I mentioned, you’ll need to create a separate account for each motorway operator so, no, it doesn’t work for non-SANEF infrastructure. I used a French card to set up my account…no idea if a foreign one would be a problem…probably not as you can use a foreign bank card to pay for most things when overseas.
Thanks for the update @marty2 - it sounds like I am better off with the BipandGo tag as that works with all autoroute operators with a single billing, plus can be used in Italy and Spain as well.
Although I’m sure ANPR and a debit from your bank will eventually take over from the toll tags, so you are ahead of the curve!
Retro step, as I am taking my bip and go in friends car this trip. Saves setting up a new account which may not accept foreing bank accounts.
