I resemble that remark, as the old joke goes.

The people who “arranged” our move forgot to tell us.

We ended up visiting a very nice douanier in Niort, who sorted things out for us several months later.

Buying a car at a dealership in France

Yes. He was very kind to us. France Services sent us to his office, assuring us we could just turn up without an appointment and get the customs work done (we’d omitted the car from the Inventory). We arrived, and the first thing we saw was a sign saying they had no facilities to deal with members of the public. He saw us out of his window; took pity on us and invited us in; and offered to do the registration and form even though that wasn’t his job (as we understood it: he was engaged in other work at the time). We bonded when I spotted the photo of Einstein and the caption “E=Fb”. That led to a chat about music, jazz mainly, and his learning piano. Very nice chap indeed.
