My daughter is moving to Manchester to study at the university. Could anyone give us the 'heads-up' as to where to live? We don't know the area at all....good public transport essential.
Good choice!
It’s a few years since I had a night out in Manchester but I’ve had a few, I have never felt I have been in danger, of course there are scuffles mostly I imagine arguments between individuals over something or other but I would think unprovoked attacks are rare. The area they describe around the printworks (my dad worked there when they printed things)is a desirable place to live for some if you like city living. Me thinks the inspector has an agenda.
At last a mancunian! I lived and worked there for most of my life, there is no shortage of student accommodation around the university close to the city centre most of it of a high standard nowadays. Most students go in halls for the first year. There is a large student village ‘Owens park’ in fallowfield a 15 min bus ride out along Wilmslow rd the busiest bus route in Europe. The poorer students stay in Fallowfield and the richer move along to Didsbury 10 mins further on. Other areas close by are Whaley range and Chorlton all have good transport links to the city but most go for the areas along wilmslow rd. There is very little in the way of student lets elsewhere to be honest.
No, don't doubt that - it is just for info. If anything it shows there is some life there. If the cops are worried it must be good. Warwick, never been but have heard that it is a yawn of a place. The timing just seemed to hit your question square on though, hence the 'Whoops' ;-)
Whoops! Take a look at this:

Depends which one she's going to. Great place to be a student.
I only spent 48 hours or a bit less on either trip to Manchester. By reputation it is a very, very good university. In my discipline, social anthropology, a couple of my closest friends are there. However, like most academics, I have not a clue about other discipline areas really, so pass.
I have spent from age 18 to just over 60 in academic life in one sense or another, at least until I last lectured exactly five years ago this month, so it has been most of my life. We hear bad things and sure there is lots of 'sausage machine' teaching and studying going on but a motivated student can do as well today as ever before. Teaching is turning into a hot house of controversy and the profession is in turmoil in the UK. If she can get a job in a good school then all good and fine, otherwise she should take the degree and run, there are other countries who will welcome her.
Best thing about Manchester is that it's not far from Leeds, sithee!
I've been there for a couple of conferences and had a room in a different student residence place each time (out of term, so rooms free for conference speakers). They were pretty good as student accommodation goes. The main campus on Oxford Road is quite central, about five minutes from Piccadilly Station where I arrived both times. It is also on the right side of the city for the airport, I seem to remember people who flew to Manchester getting to the university by train to a station not far from the campus.
