It’s still in common usage by members of the British forces.
Sadly 
HM Forces have a language and culture all their own. It is a closed society and no amount of PC training is going to change it. When the chips are down, I would rather rely on the skill of an un-pc squaddie to drag my chestnuts to safety than a snowflake who needs a ‘break-out’ room to hide in because their feelings are hurt.
