The BBC needs to wake up to the way the world is going. We would be delighted to pay a subscription to i-player.
So would I!!!
And so would I.
Just as the BBC can/have blocked i player for me in france at the moment, I am still a licence holder so should be able to watch using my login details wherever I am in the world. I would understand if I didn’t pay for the licence so by whatever means I do not believe I am side stepping their out of date ideas.
They used to, IIRC I paid about 90€ a year, but they had to stop for some international licensing reason???
Bizzare when all the other media or shopping moguls do it and capitalise massively on doing so. Another british institution hell bent on self destruction?
BBC Global iPlayer to close in June BBC Global iPlayer to close in June - BBC News
Dear BBC, there are lots of countries outside of America…Americans wouldnt like it anyway because it doesnt screen adverts every 5 minutes! Meanwhile we have to put up with their bilge.
Yes, I agree. Even the Guardian on line news subscription is full of American news I’m not the slightest bit interested in, who cares if the leader of the senate has stepped down? Or the price of sausages have gone up by a dollar a foot. The bbc web news is the same ahhh!!!
I read the online European version, but still find the NY Times’ coverage of European news far superior - also one can specify an additional daily feed of news items about specific countries.
Is this it ? https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x8e4odb
I just watched it. Very interesting. Venice is so amazing.
I think this is particularly true of the papers who sell to the US market (Guardian and i, in my experience) because they don’t have billionaire owners.
NYTimes has an introductory offer, $10 a year for the first year, but when you try to access it in turns into 20€ (still good value)
Years ago I would often buy The Guardian International and sit in a café just off the Arc de Triomphe, and read whilst waiting for the now Mrs W. to finish work I cannot remember so many American reports as there are today. It’s getting to be more Americanized…I particularly remember in-depth reports on the Afghanistan war with Russian soldiers.
One can choose from now five different online versions, but the European one still has has lots of Australian stories. I think most of the US stuff is shortened versions of NT Times articles from a couple of days previous.
Haven’t looked at the UK version for years - might sound contradictory but it became both increasingly irrelevant and increasingly depressing…
I’ve used Nord for a few years and I’m happy with it. Sometimes I have to search for a UK node that the BBC haven’t sussed yet but otherwise it’s reliable. I share my password with my daughter in Oz so a three year subscription is good value for us.
“still a licence holder” I should add I’d pay a fee for BBC of they offered one.
Bought some new pillows this week as the missus had been suffering from neck pain. Went for the same brand as our mattress, which we bought after moving here 4 years ago. They certainly weren’t cheap but they have great reviews and came with a 30 nights guarantee… Looks to be money well spent so far as she sleeps better and no longer wakes up in pain.
I had a sub to that.
Rather less glamorously, I’d read it on the bus to work in a butcher’s.
Pleased to see that Channel 4 News one something or other the other day and one of their reporters, the one with the Asian name, journo of the year I think. Almost missed it so might have got details wrong.
But imo, Lindsey Hilsum, should get some sort of outstanding award, she pops up in all the most dangerous places, tin hat and flak jacket on, for her really informative reports. The other day someone off camera was whistling at her, she blinked not one iota. ![]()
Yes, she’s great.
