‘Bloody Nora!’ is another cockney-ish expression - origin might be disputed.
We do one line on the lottery every Friday and used to win 1 or 2 euros quite regularly but nowt for a while..
This morning, OH checked his emails and cheerfully called out… “we’ve won 3,60 on the lottery” and I immediately answered “well, that’s broken our duck” then caught myself wondering where on earth I’d dragged that phrase from… ![]()
I’m sure our local SuperU (other supermarkets are available) stocks it. It’s on the shelf with the baked bears. Well, it is a big shelf.
My local SuperU no longer seems to supply ordinary Heinz baked beans! Replaced them with Heinz Chilli baked beans - yuck!
I think it’s from cricket - a batsman who scores zero is “out for a duck”, so “breaking the duck” is doing better than that.
Well, yes… but still doesn’t answer the question ‘why a duck’ ![]()
How does this happen? I thought this was a new thread because I have never seen it before and politely started reading down the replies before sticking my own 2 pennorth in. Then I looked to the right, I was on 40 of 205 ![]()
So I skipped the next 165 replies, sorry, but time is precious, and here is the first of those 2 pennies.
I used to buy great big bars of salon de Marseille but then saw a battery operated dispenser on A. Bought it and filled it with washing up liquid and now it does both me and the dishes in the kitchen sink. One short little burp goes a long way. ![]()
Second penny. I’ve forgotten, the 1st penny took up too much time and, as I said above, that is precious. ![]()
But I would still like to know how i missed a whole giant thread. ![]()
Perhaps related to a word we should not mention, and shouted in rage by an ex batsman? ![]()
Auntie Google says the “duck” for a zero score is because the number zero resembles an egg.
Like ‘love’ in tennis = l’oeuf. Google has other explanations for ‘duck’ though.
Cricket certainly featured prominently when I was a kid… Dad, uncles, brothers, cousins… all seemed to be cricket-mad… but it’s never been a passion in my life so now I’m wondering if my brain is regressing to childhood… oooh… eeer ![]()
I guess ‘out for a chicken’ sounded odd. Though I would like ‘out for an ostrich’
What sort of portion sizes do baked bears come in? Asking for a friend, obviously.
It sounds like something that Grand Frais would sell.
Brown and grizzly after being baked, I expect.
They certainly wouldn’t be too happy.
The sign’s been there for years too. They must be well aware but find it, as the english speaking shoppers do, amusing. I must remember to photo it next time I’m there .
