Who’s been on this lately… we’ve been there a couple of times… magical… that was some years ago though… hopefully it’s not changed too much…
We were in the Pay Basque last autumn, and thought about it. But very, very touristic and €50 (us and dog) so we took sandwiches and walked…
And then I spent my ticket money on learning how to make a gateau basque in the cake museum - very enjoyable.
We did it with our children and my mum 30 years ago and loved it. Went back 10 years ago and the queue was enormous at well over an hour.
Ah well… we must have hit lucky… when we visited.
Wonderful memories and we’d love to go again…
sounds like we’ve both “had the best of it…”
We had a thoroughly good time, just not on the train but looking at it!
We went on it in 2011 and enjoyed it. Quite a crowd on board the train. Great views at the top and nice horses grazing on the hills.
Some fit people were walking up/down…
A case of ending up in track and Rhune
Did this in 2019 with our young Cocker who was only a few months old, incredible views at the top as it was a lovely sunny day. Take some food with you as the restaurants/snack bar get very busy and are expensive.
Our first trip was with the carclub and they arranged for us to “take over” most of the building at the top… for our lunch. Wow, that was a super time, accordion playing gently, all of us singing along… while those “in charge” organised the food… and amused/bemused tourists watched…
We walked up not knowing just how steep it was at the top - it was an exhausting challenge! I had a very well deserved beer at the top.
I went up on the train last year with my dad. We thought we would walk back down. Got on the train in bright sunshine. Got off into freezing fog. Ate our sarnies huddled by a rock. Descended about 500m, visibility zero, saw a sign for Spain and decided to climb back up and take the train back down before any injuries occurred !
Impressed! Have to admit that we ate our sandwiches at the menhir below the summit, and decided that was enough of an achievement!
