Petition to keep Bayeux tapestry in France

Not sure I agree though!

Provided it isn’t damaged, sending it to other countries is a very good idea.

But wasn’t it made in England? If so we are on the other end of that debate in this case.

Yup - commissioned by Bishop Odo of Bayeux but most likely made by nuns in Canterbury.

UK already has the faithful replica, so why risk damaging the original.

In fact, it would make sense for UK to lend the faithful copy to other countries as and when… and leave the “fragile original” safely in Bayeux.

I agree about that - the original is incredibly fragile and really really shouldn’t be moved to go anywhere. Obvious really as it’s a piece of fabric nearly 1000 years old…

Except that it is going to be moved for the renovation of the building, so is there much of a difference between moving it 5m or 500km?
But maybe right as would have to unpack it and pack it up again.

How long is it in length? Having seen priceless art moved from one country to another the packing up of the art took ages with special materials used and crates hand built for the job. The louvre ,(sp) were going to lend a painting but their requirement was amongst a long list, make that very long list was its own plane from France to the UK.

I don’t know, but I do remember Fran and I viewing it one day and it seemed to take a very long time to get to the end. Would they roll it, surely not fold it, but if just as it is I think you would need more than a 40 foot trailer.

75m, currently displayed in a U shape

Crikey :open_mouth:

Haven’t you seen it? It’s well worth viewing but staggeringly fragile. I particularly liked the fact that the Normans wading out to their boat had taken their leggings off - seemed to bring home the humanity of the images!

But better get your skates on as museum closes on 1st September for around 5 years.

No not since I got the two Bayeux’s confused :joy: just kidding but I havent seen it. Hope they ship it to the UK, again just joking if its that fragile. Maybe the towns womens guild could start on a new one

Well they’ve already done Pearl Harbour, so the Battle of Hastings should be a doddle…
