Petrol station fraud?

Oh, I’m guilty of trying to get it to stop on a round number. Not to the point where it overflows, mind you. I feel very pleased with myself if I can manage it successfully

I also have a habit of always having the volume for the telly, the radio, a PC, etc… on an even number (I may make an exception for a 5, which I consider an honorary even number even though it’s odd).

When I hang underwear to dry on a clothes airer, I make sure to have pairs of socks drying next to each other… Can’t stand it when mixed pairs are on the same section of the airer.

Before I had a dishwasher, I would always wash the cutlery in a particular order: all the forks first, followed by desert spoons, tea spoons then finally knives.

This is all normal behaviour, right? :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

If you check your card account on your computer immediately after making a purchase involving pre-authorisation it will show an amount pending. Usually, pending to clearance is very quick and you will not see it but it will there for a short time.

Mastercard and Visa are the two major sources of financial transfers between banks and suppliers and it is them that holds the pre-auth required by a supplier.

VISA pre-authorisation system

@Nigel-at-BUF-House @hairbear @Stella’s OH. I am beginning to feel like Little Johnnie, who was the only one in step. :astonished:

My purchase (75 euro)was a 10.30 am, but I did not see the warning until 9 pm, when it was still pending at 151 euro - just a glitch, or held up by the bank until I had given the OK (which I never did) !

But, but…don’t your amps go all the way up to 11?

It’s worth remembering that you shouldn’t have to enter your pin to process a refund. So if ever someone is telling you you’re getting a refund on your card and the machine is asking for your pin (rather than just yes/no to accept the refund) then remove your card and walk quickly away!

absolutely…
The Press and Social Media of all sorts… are highlighting these frauds as soon as they are reported.
Sadly, the baddies always manage to think up new routes to part folk from their money etc…

Oh Stella, I’m with your OH on that one!!

My OH still complains about this & yes if you use your debit card it is irritating but the refund of reserved funds is usually same day. Credit cards it remains as a pending transaction for upto 5 days. With more & more stations going automated I guess its a thing of the future that we have to allow for thanks to the few who fill up & run!

This is unreal i got so much angry right now
we put fuel on these Total Energies fuel station in France and the amount was 70 euros, the amount taken from the account is 200 euros!
got a heart attack until read your comment, now whats left is to wait the difference to get back in my acc

Thanks

Normally that happens quickly!

Welcome to SF @Oliver_Tasev !

The prepayment should be returned quite quickly, as has been mentioned earlier in this thread - but sometimes it can take longer, if the vendor does not have an automatic system to release the prepayment.

I had that happen a couple of years ago when I stayed in a hotel in Rouen - the actual payment was taken at the end of my stay (which was only one night) but the pre-charge didn’t get refunded to my Wise debit card for about ten days.

It was annoying, but fortunately I had sufficient Euros in the account to cover it.

But petrol stations are normally a lot quicker than that!

I’ve heard a few horror stories about long delays, particularly with foreign cards.

The worst was someone who accidentally went to the diesel pump for trucks and it held about €700 :astonished:

My local (SuperU) fuel station pre-authorises (but doesn’t take) €150, but only charges for what you put in, up to €150.

So does my branch, Intermarché,Carrefour and the local Total station. Maybe its to do with how often you use it and not just an ocassional visitor. The other week I went to use the new automated car valeting/washing station. The last time I used it was in May ready for the CT and then you put your card in for €10 worth of jetons to be dispensed which in turn you fed into the machine as it was used. This last time, the jeton thing had gone, your CB went in the machine and €15 taken. I only used €4 worth of spray washing and thought, oh well obviously they will take it all, but no, two days later on the statement from the bank, I was only charged for that €4 and not the full €15.
