Just felt I must share these photos of Châteaux worth a visit in Nouvelle-Aquitaine
We’ve been to many of them… well worth the effort for anyone down this way…
The Buddhist monastery at Rancon 87290 is well worth a visit.
Probably best to allow half a day, and to be prepared for some walking as the grounds are huge.
We have Taize near us.
A huge car park and you can have a simple meal and listen to the singing.
Somewhere I would like to visit. ![]()
leave the traffic far behind…
We went to a chocolate fair in Bayonne. The dégustation consisted of 3 tiny pieces of chocolate.
Oh, I’d have been greatly disappointed with that ![]()
We visited the museum/factory/shop some years ago… with our car club… still great memories… and we’ve taken folk back since… yummy.
I think my favourite nibbles on the last occasion were raisins covered with hot (as in spicy) dark chocolate… ab fab.
Reviving this thread with a less well known
You seem to have been cut off in your prime, Jane. ![]()
That was a rather short-lived revival, but thanks for trying ![]()
Pegasus bridge memorial museum just outside Ouistreham (closes end of August for expansion works).
Oh whoops…
A less well known tiny 15th chapelle Saint Vigor at Saint -Martin- de Mieux 14700 (near st pierre sur dives. A lovely thing that was derelict, but rescued in the 80’s by a Japanese artist Kyoji Takubo. Loved it so much he moved to the village to keep the restauration going and did a fabulous job. Both in creating a work of art as well as a restauration, and in squeezing funds out of a stellar list of people. He is obviously well connected!
Names of all those who donated are hammered into the lead doors… @DrMarkH will recognise some favorites
Worth a short detour if nearby.
“Pegasus bridge memorial museum just outside Ouistreham (closes end of August for expansion works).”
My Dad landed on Sword Beach and crossed the Pegasus. Bridge shortly after it was taken, moving on to the battle of Caen.
The mother of a close neighbour here in SW France was a girl of 14 years old and lived in Caen at the time of the battle.
Despite being so far away, my bank is in Caen but I have never been there. I feel I should make the effort to visit the museum.
Particularly loved the complexity of the roof beams
This is an amazing place near us, that looks like nothing special from the outside
We visited it a year or so ago and it was a bit bling for me. We preferred the Chartreuse Saint Saver.
Understandable, as it’s certainly a tad more calm and tranquil. OTOH, despite its endearing wackiness, I’d rank the Penitents’ chapel comparatively low on the bling scale of Catalan baroque…
