Poitiers stopover

I’ll be driving from Calais and south towards the Spanish border in September. My current plan is a stop near Poitiers, preferably a bit south to get a flying start the following morning. Any hotel suggestions, moderate price, we are quite happy with Ibis Budget types, but need a restaurant nearby?

I stayed over in Poitiers last week. I found a comfy Airbnb in the town centre with an underground parking opposite. Loads of restos close by. Poitiers is a nice town which has changed a lot over the past thirty years with a vibrant town centre which is very pedestrian orientated.

We use the Ace Hotel at rue de la Maison Coupée, 86000 Poitiers, which has a nice restaurant virtually next door.

Thanks for the replies. I would like to avoid the city centre. It’s just an overnighter on the way south.

Poitieres, as cities go, isn’t really at all stressful in my opinion, and I don’t really like cities.
I agree with @Peter_Bird , it’s a really nice ‘town’, not really a city in it’s outlook. We went many times when we had an MS in Deux Sévres and we enjoyed it.

Not sure which way you’re going from Poitiers, but there are lots of good places to stay between there and Limoges.
Which side of the French Spanish border are you crossing ?

Do you mean Bal Ham, Gateway to the South?

Classic Peter Sellers.

In that case the Campanile on the west side is perfect with a good restaurant.

Never had a bad one, except two in the UK !

I used to have a club card which was great when I did a lot more travelling etc.

its pronounced Balm actually

We will be crossing down near Bayonne. Is the N10 after Poitiers a dual carriageway?

This says it’s mostly dual carriageway
Through France avoiding tolls - Calais-Bayonne and Southwest France.

Also, if you’re going N10 then I’d stay in Poitiers as others suggest

It was dual carriage way as far as Anguleme (sp) as I didnt go any further.

Yes, nowadays it is all dual carriage way to Angouleme, thirty five years ago only about one third was. Problem is it attracts many more HGVs as they prefer to have a free road down to Bordeaux rather than fork out for the A10 motorway.
