Political correctness stops proper safety steps for vulnerable groups

If you applied the term cross-breed about humans I would have objected certainly.

The grandmother of our children used the term cross-breed and half-castes in referring to them.

They grew up to hate her, despite my efforts to mitigate the harm she did them by regularly stigmatising them and diminishing their human value in their own eyes.

I dare anyone to repudiate their hatred. I came to hate her too.

You do like to split hairs don’t you Peter? Nothing pejorative about the word mongrel in ordinary usage as others here have said.

I am not surprised you resented that. Was it your mother, or your wife’s, who called her grandchildren that? I hope your children grew up more tolerant, rather than less, because of their experience.

No, I am not splitting hairs, Irene.

You can use the term mongrel about yourself if you like to, and get satisfaction thereby. So can Eddie or Stella for that matter.

But if you use the term about others you are crossing a line you should not cross. That’s not splitting hairs, it’s putting you on notice if you use it here on SF about individuals or racial types you think merit it, or won’t mind. I will, and I will flag it.

It was my mother. She is dead, and I am grateful.

She lived to be 102. I don’t think many mourned her.

Our children are paragons of justice and respect for others, including animals and birds, all living entities.

Oh get over yourself, for goodness sake. You’re just being ridiculous now. It’s perfectly clear from my other posts on this thread that I would not call any individual a mongrel.
I’m done with you as well today.

Good for you, about time.

Missing you already Irene :sob::grinning:

The difficulty here, Peter, is that most people who call Britons mongrels are those who (like I do) take delight in the suggestion that you can’t tell how much
African
Arab
Chinese
Dane
Indian
Pakistani
Scot
Viking
Welsh
Traveller

each of us has in our genes. It’s a great leveller.

Indeed, the only people who usually object to the idea (that we’re mixed-race) are the Tommy Robinson types.

I appreciate you have a personal sensitivity here and you’re writing from good motives.

Peter, I have noticed that there are certain subjects that seem to cause you ,for want of a better expression to ‘red mist ,‘ when that happens it appears you only hear what you think you hear or you want to hear ,you don’t listen to reason or explanations ,or what others have to say. This makes the forum,(and surely by definition a forum is open to all opinions? )a very uncomfortable place to be. If it makes me a loud middle aged bloke reluctant to post what does it do to others who aren’t as confident and assertive? As a result the forum becomes slewed as only certain people are posting and it borderlines on becoming egocentric

I appreciate your kindness, it helps.

In what way is genetic miscegenation a leveler? What goes up and what goes down? It’s a genuine question, not a provocative one. I’d like to understand you better.

I think I might be extra-sensitive if I’d experienced what Peter and his kids did, which he may have written after you posted.

I’m glad he explained why there are certain subjects he’s sensitive about, and why.

@Peter_Goble - as you are seemingly finding it difficult to calm down and listen to others and as you have made at least one personal comment and as I am supposedly on holiday and do not intend to police this thread all night…I would suggest that you stop posting right now. Cheers.

Because we’re all mixed-race, Peter - which is to say, we’re all human race. The idea of racial superiority is a nonsense.

The difficulty is that sometimes our mix can be seen and reacted adversely to.

Thanks guys! Xx

As I understand it, the reason ‘race’ does not exist biologically, but is in fact socially-constructed, is that although of course there are genes that affect skin colour, etc, there is actually more genetic diversity within black or white groups of people than there is between them - ie. if you are, say, black, you might well be genetically closer to a white person than you are to some other black person.

David Olusoga’s excellent television series Black and British: A Forgotten History went right back to the earliest known inhabitant of the British Isles - who was in fact black - and told the stories on many subsequently documented black Britons, from the Romans onwards (there are no earlier written records). Near its conclusion the programme asked the question: if black people have been in the UK for millenia, where are all the ancient black families now? - then they told a white Englishman they had traced his ancestry to a black friend of Dr Johnson, back in the 18th century. Luckily, he was not prejudiced, and was delighted to find that his family had once been black.
