Prices of second hand stuff

It’s very variable. I’ve actually been given stuff at brocantes, even by a couple of the professionals that we know. Some really fantastic deals. Other times, asked ten or fifteen times what a thing was worth new. That is exactly the same as my experience at UK car boots.

My experience has been that professionals selling on Le Bon Coin have decent prices, eg older cement mixer up for sale when they’ve bought a new one - individuals are sometimes way over ambitious.

As for cars… yes, second hand cars are dearer here. Which means new ones hold their value better

In my experience over the past 20 years people selling 2nd -hand in France want to get back there original purchase price plus.

This has driven a lot of depot-vente places out of business as the people selling stuff will not accept a realistic price for their years/decades old property.

As regards cars I have found it a lot cheaper to buy in the UK (making sure you carefully choose which manufacturer/model) and import the veihicle to France. Of course this option may not be available after 31st December this year!

I find that secondhand furniture has dropped radically in price. I was moving house and selling furniture and it was difficult to get more than €30 for antique country furniture. Apparently ‘brown furniture’ is not fashionable anymore and this is the same in England too. I know of some profressional brocanters who have given up because they can’t sell the stuff anymore. Chests of drawers or armoires that once sold for several hundred now go for €30. It’s sad because a lot of old things will end up at the dechetterie

We have a specialised Lycée in woodworking, and the students will up-cycle pieces of furniture. A friend had a couple of old heavy dark wood sideboards re-invented by adding brightly coloured perspex and other alterations. Sounds odd, but worked great. He used them as display cases in his shop, and when he sold up they were sold for a very good price.

If you look around you might find upcyclers prepared to take them?

Hi Newbie here. What is the LBC? And do you have a link pls? I am looking for a second hand stove and washer. Are there other places I should check? Moving just outside Le Dorat. Thanks all!

Hi, welcome to SF.
