Hi all I believe some make of printers no longer let you use compatible inks. Can anyone tell me which brand allows them?
Get an Epson Ecotank, cheaper to use than ink cartridges original or compatible.
Seconded
I’ve only had Brother printers for 25 years and have never had issues with non generic ink cartridges or laser toners, they complain about them on screen, but they don’t stop functionality or such. Which is not to say they definitely don’t do some subscription pln for inks or shut off printers for non-brand cartridges but if they do I’ve never heard of it.
We have two printers - the Epson A3 printer in which we only use the recommended inks but with the Canon Pixma 7250 we use inks bought from Action and they work perfectly.
Do you really really need an inkjet printer? Specificially a colour one?
If not, then a black and white laser is much more economical to run and doesn’t suffer from gummed up nozzles due to infrequent use like an inkjet may do.
And the majority of lasers will work with non-branded toner packs.
Personally, I have a Xerox BW laser for routine documents and a separate Canon ip8750 colour inkjet when I want to print colour photographs (which I used to do quite a lot but rarely do nowadays).
Best of both worlds, but if I didn’t have the Canon already I would simply use a photo lab to print photographs.
I have used “compatible” inks with the Canon but sometimes they were fine sometimes the Canon had a hissy fit and spat them out (not literally!) - so using off-brand ink can be hit and miss, even if in theory the printer accepts them.
Brother lasers are also very good - my last one of those did 15 years service!
Thank you all I will see if I can maybe pick up a used one it’s just for my daily crosswords
Definitely get a laser in that case! You should be able to get a refurbished / customer return on Amazon for less than €100.
