Hello! We are moving to Quillan in a few months and are getting things ready for the jump over the pond. My wife is a veterinarian technician, and we are bringing two dogs with us. We feed them pretty high quality food here, nothing boutique, but store available dog food. Does anyone have any advice or experience on having dog food delivered or a brand that is comparable to quality dry food in the states (think Iams, Eukanuba, Science Diet, etc. for comparison). We are just getting our budget outlined and wanted to put some rough numbers in there for pets. Thanks for any help!
We use Bab’in which is manufactured in the SW. if you look at the composition it is better than some of the well known brands
Merci beaucoup, Jane! My wife had actually looked at that brand, so it is nice to hear a confirmation on that. Looks like we can get that delivered as well! This gives me a great starting point.
We use Maxizoo
I don’t think the OP need worry about supplies of good animal products here. Lots of specialist animal shops, online suppliers and vets who can order special diet.
Just feed them real food.
I have always purchased from Defu after giving up on Eukanuba
We use Maxizoo for our cat food as well. We buy three different cereal free croquets and make up a mixture with different properties and flavours. They love them.
Expensive!! Love our dog, but maybe not that much.
What do you feed yours? The dog meat you can get in supermarkets is the cheapest, fattiest meat with the lowest welfare standards. And then have to work out how to provide all the other nutrients.
Ours get croquettes (by product of SW duck industry admittedly) augmented with lots of veg, sardine oil, and leftovers.
All mine have had a tin of sardines in tomato sauce or olive oil each day plus a ladle or 2, according to size, of Friskies Active croquettes. Afterwards they get a bit of stale bread to clean their teeth with.
Haven’t had any teeth fall out yet and my one current dog, Jules the Beauceron/Dobermann (not much evidence of the latter though), maintains his weight of 38 kilos for years and is fit as a fiddle at almost 11 years of age.
Still fearing fat? That 60’s and 70’s message should long be forgotten now, it was wrong then and still is. The low fat revolution was fraud.
You are right, dog meat in some shops probably is the lowest standard. I remember a friends wife studying food at university, Sainsbury’s meat at the time was said to be 1% above animal food standards.
They eat the same as me for meat and the local butcher in our intermarche has a good supply of offcuts. They get offal like liver once a week or 25% fat minced beef also real chicken. They have some fibre from veg in their food as well.
No, but its not hugely nutritious.
I buy online from
Well its a mix isn’t it, we have protein, fat and carbohydrates. To feel full we need to put in food. If we reduce one of those three we will inevitably increase another to fill ourselves up. Over the years we have seen reduced fat foods, now they would not taste so good if the food manufacturers didn’t increase the mouth feel and flavour, this has been done by adding more carbohydrates and salt and obesity rates have increased so had other ailments.
Fat is a great source of energy, so you need less to feel full, its essential and an enabler of fat soluble vitamins. Feeling full by the addition of fats (good ones) means a reduction in carbohydrates that have taken over in the food pyramid and we were not really meant to eat all those carbohydrates. In the end its a choice but to malign fat is not correct, my BMI is 19, my body fat is 12% and I am eating 2 meals a day as I am doing a lot of physical work plastering and one meal with all that wasn’t working. We are all different so we make our own choices.
My dog can’t make a choice (apart from eating cow pats) so I have to make it for him!
They are better at knowing what to eat and what not to right up to the Point when pet food companies used the same salt and sugar type flavourings to make non food attractive.
There are no pockets in shrouds.
We have 2 terriers and so they get 42g each per day supplemented by veg and on once a week sardines.
They also self supplement with the odd cat, voleur or at present Parisians.
Now Barf food is expensive and if there is beef, just keep up wind.
No postmen ?
Or does the French flavour not appeal to them?
