Registering my dog in France

I have just moved to Beaumontois en Perigord with my dog. I have taken my eye off the ball and discovered that I should have registered her with a vet within 7 days. I am now in my second week here. Does anyone know what the vet is like in Beaumontois? Will I be penalised for not doing this within the seven days? I have been so absorbed with the move that the time has just flown by. Don’t know why but I thought I had several weeks in which I could register her. Any advice based on other’s experience would be appreciated. Thanks. Pat

As no one’s replied who can give you the definitive answer, my suggestion is - just go and register with this vet. You can always change at a later date. Get the paperwork done, then you can stop worrying. You’ve enough on your plate during the early days and explain that you’ve been busy. Leaving it will just make things worse.

We didn’t register our cat within the correct time, as far as I can remember.

The vets aren’t interested in telling you off, so don’t worry. They’ll just register the animal.

Yes, I am calling the vet today. I do have enough on my plate and I think the seven day registration period is unreasonable given the scheme of things. I get why it is that though as pets do go missing when moving to a new place. Thanks for replying.

That’s reassuring! I feel better now. Thanks for replying!

I went online to see if you could register directly, and unfortunately it has to be initiated by a vet. But no mention of time limits and dates, so like others I th8nk you’ll be fine.

This is page for your interest

I think it’s because the vet has to read and enter the chip number?

Which should be on other docs too? But yes I guess needs verifying so people don t register dogues as doodles.

I really did not know this was a requirement. We’ve brought 2 cats over and not registered. Eek!

Are they at least vaccinated and tattoed / chipped? So just a question of re-registering them in France?

There is a significant fine for not registering your animals, but if you come forward and explain it was an honest mistake then very unlikely to be fined.

ICad is the official registration system and only required if you move permanently to France. You are meant to register within three months.

Yes you go through a vet to start the process. They will read the microchip which must conform to EU rules. You also want to get an EU pet passport from your vet, which is different for travelling around Europe.

ICAD is a national record of all pet dogs, cats and ferrets! One major purpose is locating lost and identifying found pets. It’s not an exactly efficient organisation that will come chasing after you! Until recently the €12 fee had to be paid by cheque! I’m told they accept credit cards now.

Where did you get that?

The government says 7 days, as has previously been said.

I didn’t get that quite right. You only have to register with iCAD if you are a permanent resident and your animal will be in the country for more than 3 months.

Before I moved here from Belgium (dual nationality) last year, I was in and out of France for several months at a time with two dogs. I spoke with iCAD and was advised that I did not need to register until I was a permanent resident AND the dogs would be here for three months.

That said, go to the vet and make sure the animal is correctly chipped and has its EU passport as soon as possible. But don’t worry about iCAD fining you for being a week or two late. British dogs cannot get an EU passport any longer until you get permanent residency.

Thanks for the info, I had it in my head that I had three months. I have a 12 month visa and will be applying for residency. I have an appointment for the vet next week. I arrived in France two weeks ago today.

Either did I. I don’t think we ever “registered” our dog here. So I guess we were resident but she was a tourist :face_with_hand_over_mouth: She would have left the Country a few times every year anyway, and the vet we used (Clinique Vétérinaire la Souris Verte :slightly_smiling_face:) for tick treatment etc. never mentioned registering her to me. Maybe my late wife did it, she was very meticulous.

If she left the country then presumably had a pet passport of some sort? So would have been registered with whichever country her passport was from.

Of course, she had an Irish pet passport. Does that mean she didn’t have to registered in France? She was a regular on the Chunnel and Cherbourg ferry :slightly_smiling_face: My wife used to say that when I drove down alone I only stopped to fill the car and empty the dog.

I had a Merc SL at the time and our little black cocker used to sit on the centre armrest, mostly with the roof down, wearing her Doggles to protect her eyes and a little peaked Harley-Davison leather cap. We had great trips :slightly_smiling_face:

Was that during her Rob Halford phase?

Remarkably similar faces..
