Rights of UK citizens in EU at risk as member states' legislation not yet in place

Experts express concern over the loss of Britons’ free movement rights after Brexit. Testimony from the British in Europe campaign group to UK Parliamentary Select Committee.

This is what we have been talking about in the topic “Class action to keep EU Citizenship.”
Additionally, anyone who has been abroad for more than 10 years will not be able to vote anywhere, effectively becoming a non person, in the electoral sense.

10 years, the Tories said that they would repeal the 15 year rule in their Manifesto!

They say what they like don’t they and then not do it? Aussie interpretation of UK politics

Where have you seen this Mike?

Mike,

But a generalised class action is unlikely to succeed as we have already seen.

It will need focused challenges to individual EU27 states and even the EU (in one or another of its forms), to challenge the way the UK citizens living, working, studying, with family or businesses in EU 27 states have had their acquired and established rights ignored by the EU and the member states.

As ex-EU citizens we have fewer rights than long-term EU residents from 3rd nation countries.

Best,

Actually it has been the Labour Party that have opposed ALL UK expats having a vote.

If you look at the evolution of the legislation Labour have always tried to restrict Expat votes. The Tories proposed removing all restrictions decades ago.

The most recent attempt to enfranchise us failed because Labour opposed it due to the administrative work involved! But that was when Labour was being “led” by Jeremy Corbyn.

It was Labour that blocked the latest attempt to enfranchise UK expats not the tories.

Which? What?

Jane,

That would be good to know. Knowing what the basis of the class action is will help all of us distinguish between the fanciful claims and those that have a real chance of success.

Mike,

Some detail, links to, etc. what people assert would be of great value to the forum.

Of course when referencing how individuals have been treated that not might always be possible.

Here is the link that tells us that the French Government won’t be addressing our rights and concerns until Oct 2020 https://brexit.gouv.fr/sites/brexit/accueil/vous-etes-britannique-en/droit-au-sejour-en.html

The page is largely full of French “blah-blah” and does not provide any certainty about our rights or how we can prove those rights.

Sorry Jane,
Of course 15 years. Seem to have lost all sense of timeduring lockdown!
But it’s too late to change now, we needed thevote in the referendum.

I suspect there is an element of quid pro quo here, they are waiting to see how the UK government plan to treat French nationals.

They had objections and wanted amendments, but the bill was “talked out” by a Conservative -

This 10 year rule.

Yes, I was wrong and have already posted a correction.

If it was in the Manifesto they should bring in legislation and not let it just be a Private Members Bill.
They talk about keeping promises, well they should start here.

It was the Conservative Party who promised to put an end to the 15 year rule. You know that bunch who have been governing Britain for a while. I expect you are a member as they too keep trying to blame Labour for their own inadequacies.

Your rights will depend on your government.

Why on earth would the rights that British Citizens have enjoyed for years be listed in a web page about the online portal for applying for the documentation that you will need after Britain leaves the EU.
