All the children born in Tennessee get a book from her every year for several years so they would have an interest in learning to read unlike her daddy who was illiterate

The Guardian has a whole article with Dolly Parton quips. I loved how she didn’t take herself seriously.
“The way I see it, if you want the rainbow, you gotta put up with the rain.”

She also recounted the story of how she entered Dolly Parton lookalike contest in a gay bar in West Hollywood - and lost.

I think quite a lot of famous faces have either suffered the same fate, or had a myth grow up that they did. That said it appears that it was actually true in her case - in a drag queen celebrity impersonator contest in Los Angeles.
I’ve just been reading, with tears in my eyes cos I think she was a truly lovely person, the BBC story of how the world has reacted to Dolly’s death. As you may know, she was famous for her one-liners but one of the best I think is :
‘If you see someone without a smile give them yours’
Just wonderful - it sums the woman up !

My daughter has a friend who lives three hours away down in Chattanooga and she was talking with her earlier on FB and her twins got sent home from school as soon as the news broke as a mark of respect.

She seems to be one of those rare people who have done nothing but good.
I’m sad today as Tim Curry has died, how marvellous he was in the Rocky horror Picture Show (which also featured my childhood neighbour in London as the criminologist).

Richard O’Brien is still with us at the ripe age of 84. I know he did a couple of other things (mainly Crystal Maze) but if you had to have only one brilliant idea in your life the Rocky Horror show is a pretty good one.

Back in the 70’s there was an ITV programme called Rock Follies about a female singing group and if I remember he was in that too, I was young but it was different at the time. Think Rula Lenska was one of the singers
And Julie Covington, the best singer of Evita but turned her back on the industry.

He was a voice actor in a number of famous computer games in the 80s and 90s.
And was rather good in the 1985 fantasy film Legend.
I loved her. She was incredibly talented, achieved amazing things in her life but never forgot where she came from. Her Imagination Library, gifts books to children from birth to age five in the US, Canada, UK, Australia and Ireland.As Shiba said, it was inspired by her father’s inability to read and write. The creation of Dollywood, near her childhood home was an effort by her to provide jobs in this poor area. These are just two of the ways (there are many more) in which she used her success and her money to give back.

My daughter went into town yesterday and said it was very sombre with all flags at half mast and people just paying respects at different locations down by the Ryman and on Broadway. We drove down into Brentwood where she lived last summer and her house was visible from the road, nothing over pretentious either compared to the other stars in the same neighbourhood.
