Le respect pour les dĂ©funts ne doit pas conduire Ă  la cĂ©citĂ© sur son parcours. Jean-Marie Le Pen Ă©tait un raciste et antisĂ©mite notoire, adorateur de PĂ©tain et un tortionnaire en AlgĂ©rie. Le racisme, la haine des musulmans, l’antisĂ©mitisme ne sont pas des polĂ©miques. Ce sont des dĂ©lits punis par la loi.

He said this in reaction to Francois Bayrou’s eulogy descrbing Le Pen as a political figure and an instigator of controversies.

Bit of an idiot maxim - are we supposed to laud Hitler, Stalin, Idi Amin, Pol Pot, Marcos, Duvalier and Ceaușescu not to mention a litany of other unpleasant humans simply because they are dead?

I’ve always thought it was a bit ironic and corresponded to ‘if you can’t say anything nice don’t say anything at all’ and thought it was a peace-keeping measure. It doesn’t mean they have to be praised. I wouldn’t have anything remotely nice to say about Le Pen but I don’t think he is a historical figure like the others you mention. Saying anything about him is giving the old creep too much importance.
