Rotules de boeuf/ mammouth?

We were given a raw bone by the breeder for our Airedale teenager to chew. In an email to us she described it as a “rotule de boeuf / mammouth”. It seems a very sensible chew as it is a knuckle bone and there are no sharp bone splinters. She loves it and I am now looking to get another one, but I am somewhat confused by this word “mammouth”. Is this a brand name? The size of the beef joint? I had assumed I would just ask our local butcher for a rotule de boeuf but now I’m not sure.

Has anyone come across this and know what she was talking about please?

Yes I also Googled and got similar results.

It seems they are using the term “Mammouth” to describe a very large leg bone from a cow or ox, rather than it being from an actual mammoth!

“rotules de boeuf” translates as “beef kneecaps” :slight_smile:

I remember Mammouth being a French supermarket chain in my early years of travelling around France and bought out by Auchan in the late 90s.

Our local butcher refers them as ‘Postman’s leg’
