Routes in central France!

Not on a Garmin it isn’t! I stopped using mine party because of its mania for back roads, mentioned above. I wish it had had a “favour large roads” option in its settings, but it doesn’t.

Even the phone apps will suggest silly little roads from time to time - when the main routes into Guildford from me are busy, Google will sometimes suggest using “Halfpenny Lane”, which is a sort of miniature alpine pass that climbs up the Surrey Hills and into Guildford via Pewley Downs - a single-track hellhole much favoured by mothers in giant SUVs doing the school run.

Clearly also far from ideal - though I was talking about Google maps specifically.

I’m sure many of us have had bizarre satnav experiences at times. Like being taken off the freeway at a junction, across the junction and then back on. Or with one in Spain, being shown to be driving through the water of a reservoir despite the road having obviously been there for a long time. Or arriving at a farmyard instead of a destination on the far side of the valley in Devon.

Yes Google Maps did that to me on the M11 when there was a big tailback - it obviously thought it was helping me avoid the traffic!

The Garmin also did the “junction swerve” to me on the A12 in Essex once. I think it was trying to follow the line of the old Roman road.

Not always mad - Google often does this at J14 on the M25 when it is sometimes quicker than staying on the motorway if there is heavy queueing.

I assume that you mean “gone” rather than “there” - or did you have the amphibious vehicle option enabled

Similar or identical place name I assume?

It goes without saying one should keep the map database updated or strange thing will definitely happen - we had been a bit lazy with the map in the Mazda and, once the last bit of the D177 Rennes-Redon dual carriageway update was finally oipened it cheerfully displayed us driving through a field when on that bit of road…

We chose to ignore instructions and took the obvious route, which was a road that ran across the reservoir. Hire car satnav bonged a bit and suggested we were in the middle of the water.

Postcode. The farmer told us people were always turning up due to satnav.

Oh, I see - bit like us and the fields between Rennes and Redon

Yes, some postcodes cover quite a large area which can be a problem if satnavving (is that a word? Never mind I just invented it) using postcode alone.

Also a problem for delivery drivers in smaller areas!

We have our Amazon and DPD blokes trained up now, but they used to follow the postcode blindly and try and deliver my parcels to the children’s playground on the village green, which is round the back of our house and only accessible that way if you feel like climbing over a wire fence, pushing through a lot of brambles and crossing a deep ditch.

I’ve skipped the above discussion, so apologies if someone already suggested it.

Bison Futé is excellent for giving up to date info on road blockages due to road works, accidents and tailbacks. Always worth checking on big holiday dates.

Also, I thought everyone knew that road works were deliberately timed to cause summertime holidaymakers maximum inconvenience.

Does what three words exist in france? Found it helpful in the UK where posh peoples houses had names and not numbers :joy:

When I say posh I am obviously excluding Essex

Yes, at least you can have your co-ordinates as a trio of French words

Not sure how popular it is though.

Give them another 10 years :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

Some people are still very keen on minitel

I did work for Canal+ many years ago to connect their satellite STBs through the Minitel network to their own servers forthe purposes of PPV authorisation.
