Secateurs

Just trying to learn some of the subtleties of gardening, does anybody know why these are different shapes, €4.99 each from Lidl!

The anvil type are in the end useless. Go to your local co-op agricole and look at the Bahco range of secateurs. The pack will tell you the maximum diameter of twig they will cut. They are amost entirely by -pass secateurs. They have the advantage that almost all the parts of the secateur can be bought as spares much like the more expensive Velco secateurs. The same thing goes for Bahco long handled pruners for tree pruning. It's the difference between Stilh garden tools and the rest. You pay more but you get a quality product which will last. You can sharpen them easily but if you're not sure how to do this you may well find a local affuteur to do it for you. The guy on Ste Foy market on Saturdays is an expert.

My missus regularly loses 'em & I usually find 'em with the mower on my occasional foray into the long stuff . She also has a problem keeping the little spring thing which keeps 'em apart but that's another story. I reckon we can match your 20 pairs Jules :-)

Thanks Julian, I have never had any of the anvil ones. Good to know what they are for.

We also have many names for them I guess. I have bought the left hand ones as 'pruners' and other names.

The left hand one is a pruning secateur, that is to say it makes clean cuts. The other?
