Can she get that couple of kilometres, safely, under her own steam… ???
Actually, I would have thought fetching her might well fall under the auspices of “urgent family stuff” on the Attestation to go 100+km…
and you can get your Attestation for the journey… authorised/stamped by your Mairie… as an extra “plus” … I would reckon. Certainly worth asking them. I know mine would be in favour of such a journey…
I disagree.
I don’t know anyone normal and civilised in either country who has ‘a selective and flexible’ approach to complying with the law, I think you get crooks and trash everywhere who think they are exempt though.
Several times in several speeches various members of the powers-that-be referred to the police having discretion to interpret the rules…which actually drives us mad. (We would prefer to know what a rule is and not have to debate with a gendarme whether it is acceptable to go to a supermarket 5km further away because it has a fish counter and a range of organic products, and we don’t eat meat.)
So they are expecting a degree of flexibility to happen.
Oh I think that’s a bit too absolutist for me Vero. What happens if a law is unjust? Or even just silly? I believe that some laws are even enacted for expediency and the lawmakers have no intention of deploying the resources to enforce them. During my forty years years association with France I seen many’s the blind eye turned.
IMO in the UK it’s very much more “the law is the law”. Not as much so as in Germany but certainly more so than southern Italy. France is somewhere n between. It’s probably a celt vs anglo saxon thing
Exceptional reasons… are just that… exceptional… and they have always been an option… just need to clarify exactly what is going on… and the Mairie will certainly be able to advise and help. (at least mine will and I see no reason why others would not).
Thanks, the debate has been useful. I have for various reasons a foot in each country, my car is British registered and indeed on my tax documentation it has my UK address and French address. I think my best bet is wait till next month and give it a go then. We will self isolate anyway as my wife is high risk
Some slight provocation: I have driven over the speed limit, only enough to get 1 point taken off, but it is an infraction - and done it more than once, paid my fine etc etc. And I think it serves me right.
I have never, ever, driven after drinking any quantity of alcohol.
No when I say trash and crooks I suppose I’m really thinking of liars, fraudsters, people who don’t insure their vehicles or pay their taxes or respect the confinement and distanciation sociale.
And then there are criminals who commit violent crimes and crime on a large scale.
There you have it Jane. Some countries (and some police forces) are more comfortable with clearly defined laws which are fully enforced and you end up before the beak (as Wooster would say) and others tolerate a greater degree of flexibility at the front end. I guess the trick is to know which one you are in at any one time
Probably a good decision Philip, especially considering your wife. My biggest worry on the back was the ferry due to little social distancing between truckers. Chunnel should be better.
Work to have it changed! Obviously some laws are totally stupid eg the one (at last abrogated) that said women couldn’t wear trousers in the Sénat or l’assemblée I forget which.
