Seeking neuropsychological assessment in English

Dear Network, help needed for an English language in France.

My husband urgently needs to undertake a neuropsychological assessment “bilan neuropsychologique” in English but cannot travel to the UK due to his illness.

We have been desperately seeking someone who can carry this out within a reasonable distance of our home (Paris / Ile de France or within 2h drive of Gisors (27 / 60 border) but so far the CPAM has not been able to identify anyone who can do this in English language in France.

Can anybody help point me in the right direction to get my husband the help he needs ?

Thanks in advance

Danielle

I guess Lyon is out of the question?

I’ve just put bilan neuropsychologie in Doctolib for gisors and it’s come up with about 8 - mainly in Paris. But at least 4 or them list that they speak english.

Perhaps your local branch of France Alzheimer could point you in the right direction?

Or maybe phone or email the nearest large teaching hospital to enquire. Rouen? Orléans? Caen?

Hi Jane, yes Lyon is too far. And unfortunately just being able to speak English is no guarantee that they can carry out the test in English.

We have met quite a few doctors with very good levels who say they are not competent to do it.

Have just thougt of the American Hospital in Paris though and sent a request.

Rouen are the hospital that oversee Sam’s case and they say they have noone who can do it. Same for Beauvais and Amiens.

Our DAC coordinator has been phoning all over the place on our behalf and even she cant find anyone

Will try France Alzheimers.

I was about to suggest the American hospital.
Is there a British one too.in Paris?

Have you tried contacting the consulate? No idea if they’d be able to help but they may be aware of other organisations who could.

Just to check, is a a psychiatrist, a neurologist, a psychologist, or something else that you need?

And does it have to be in person or would a video link work?

From what I have read, it should be done by a “neuropsychologue”, Im not sure if they are more based in neurology or psychology but at the American hospital it seems to be covered by Neurology

I just read the attached advertisement in a copy of “Etcetera” and wonder whether they might be able to point you in the direction of a similar more local organisation:

Agree, but one of them was Romanian so english would most likely be good.

I think for a neuropsychological diagnosis the practitioner must be a native speaker of the patient’s native language if they are to do a proper job. I know my (French) mother being tested in her 3rd language in Germany was a complete waste of time as it meant nothing.

Yes, this is what Ive understood, they have to have a native level for it to be effective

Can’t help with any suggestions other than those that have already been made, but I just wanted to say how sorry I am for all that you guys are going through. And sending love xx

Thanks Cat, appreciate it

We were told by a specialist many years ago that although a french medical professional can speak in english to patients during a consultation, they cannot put anything in writing in english as mistakes can be made if it is not in french with the correct grammar etc and could cause serious and litigous consequences for patients/medics.

Hi,
Try Dr Olivier Coubard - I recently used him to get a bilan for my son. We are English speaking though my son speaks some French, but Coubard speaks good English. I hope this helps.
