The question is. Are you a resident in France or not? If not tell the authorities! Is the house in France your principal home. If so. That’s fine you have a cart Sejour. You claim taxes here not in the UK
You can not have it both ways!
That was only the unsubtle one - possibly not someone used to British indirectness and diplomacy and I did refer to that exception.
We (having moved here November 2024) toddled along to the tax office a couple of days ago.
The woman behind the counter seemed a bit taken aback. We’d get a letter about Income Tax in May, and something about the equivalent of council tax October-ish.
Very Gallic
One of many big differences between France and the UK is that here there’s a very, very small window in which to complete and return your income tax form, even more so if it’s your first one. Also the amount of time you have depends on the number of your département - we’re in the Aveyron (12) which is one of the earliest.
However, while your tax office can be very helpful, most are under massive strain during the small window for tax form completion. Basically get as much as possible in order in advance.
?? First week in April to last week in May in general. So 7 weeks. And since the return period is January to December 31 you have 3 months from 1 st Jan to collect papers together before declaration period opens in April.
I don’t think that’s very short.
If you’re waiting for a UK P60, the first week in April’s far too early. However the principal point I was making is that it’s far shorter than in the UK or elsewhere that I’ve lived.
You don’t submit the P60, so I’m not seeing the problem. I know what the figures are sometime in April.
I didn’t suggest you submitted the P60, but OTOH for me ‘?? First week in April’ is different to 'sometime in April '.
I really don’t see why you’re bothering to argue with me over some advice to a third party that reflects my own perception of our first French tax return. If you have alternative advice direct it to them!
Did she actually say ‘you will receive a letter’?
Be alert to the tax deadline and if you haven’t received a letter and the deadline is approaching, download the forms and get them done. It’s your responsibilty. It is no good saying ‘l wasn’t reminded’ if you miss the deadline and get fined.
Thanks. Yes, she did say that, and I will be watching the post from March!
Don’t rely on getting any letters, the Impôts are notorious for not informing people until they want payment and have slapped a majoration on. In France, the onus for most things is on the individual seeking out the information and doing the paperwork themselves, the excuse of being naiive about anything dosn’t wash with them or others like URSSAF etc.
and here on the forum… we’ll all be talking/reminding…
Not arguing, just very surprised that this seems to be an issue
Have you done the necessary to get connected with an espace particulier? I know some préfectures are sticky about doing it in advance, but if you can in makes things easier.
The dates haven’t been announced yet, but there will be a date in April when you can download forms
That was one of the things I hoped to do when we went to the office, but the message was that nothing need be done at this stage.
That said, if you have any tips on how to connect with “the system” in general, I’d be grateful.
I would be very suspicious of the advice you’ve been given. Unless you have a tax reference number from the impots, you won’t get anything as they won’t know you exist. If you do have a tax ref number, you can use that to easily create an espace particulier online and use that to ask for the forms. You always have to be pro active in France.
You can try this. It will work with some tax offices and not with others. Some have reported success with simple email requesting a numero fiscal with copy of CdS, ID, and eg EDF bill.
Thanks
